Volleyball Blasts Michigan In Three

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State volleyball team followed the football team's lead and scored a decisive 3-0 defeat over rival Michigan, 3-0, on Wednesday night in Jenison Field House for its second Big Ten win of the season. MSU broke a four-match losing streak with a 15-9, 15-6, 15-5 win. Jam Jenison produced the second-largest crowd of the year, with 1,035 fans cheering the Spartans to victory.
Sophomore outside hitter Erin Hartley led all hitters with 16 kills on a career-high .600 hitting percentage (16-1-25). She also hit her 500th career kill, ending the match at 501. Junior middle Jessica Sanborn added 11 kills while junior outside hitter Sarah Gustin tallied 10. Maren Witzel notched a match-high 13 digs while setter Vicki Basil was the glue holding together the Spartan offense with 43 assists, four digs and three blocks.
Gustin, Sanborn and Angela Morley each tagged four blocks as MSU outblocked the Wolverines 10-7. The Spartans? defense and serving also shut down Michigan offensively as UM hit ?.017 to MSU?s .283.
Michigan State is now 12-7 on the year, 2-5 in the Big Ten. Michigan falls to 10-6 overall and 2-5 in the conference. The Spartans return to action on Friday, Oct. 15 in Jenison Field House at 7 p.m. versus Northwestern.
