Volleyball Wins Second Straight

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State volleyball team won its second match in a row, defeating Northwestern, 3-0, on Friday night in Jenison Field House. The victory, the 10th in a row over the Wildcats, moves the Spartans to 13-7 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten. Northwestern falls to 2-15 overall, 0-7 in conference play.
Erin Hartley led MSU with 20 kills on a career-best .607 hitting percentage (20-3-28). It marked the second match in a row that Hartley improved upon her single-match percentage high. She also notched her fourth double-double of the season by adding 11 digs. Sarah Gustin scored 16 kills on .484 hitting (16-1-31) for State, while Jessica Sanborn had 13 kills (13-3-19=.526) and a season-high eight blocks (2-6). Setter Vicki Basil tallied 46 assists and nine digs in the match. Tammy Vonderheide earned her 500th career dig, finishing with nine for the night.
?This was a good win for us,? said MSU head coach Chuck Erbe. ?We had a completely different lineup, and after starting slowly in game one, we took control.?
Jennifer Zagorski led Northwestern with 13 kills on .545 hitting (13-1-22). Carmen Burbach also contributed with seven kills and a team-high nine digs.
Overall, Michigan State outhit Northwestern .440-.192 and outblocked the Wildcats 11-4. The Spartan lineup underwent a slight change as Maren Witzel moved back to the middle and Tammy Vonderheide played all the way around while Angela Morley, the Spartans? normal starting middle, was sidelined with plantar fascitis in her right foot. She is expected to play next week.
Michigan State goes out on the road for four straight matches beginning next Friday, Oct. 22 at Illinois. On the 23rd, the Spartans are at Indiana, and then on the 29th and 30th MSU is off to Minnesota and Iowa.
