MSU topped by Notre Dame to split season series.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Even though Wednesday night's baseball game between Michigan State and Notre Dame was a nine-inning contest, all the scoring came in the first two innings of the game, and the Irish hung on for a 3-2 win at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium.
Wednesday's game was nationally televised on the Big Ten Network. With Wednesday's result, the Spartans and Fighting Irish split the season series, with both visiting teams winning, after MSU's 7-4 win in South Bend two weeks ago on April 8. The road team has won six of the last nine match-ups played on campus.
Wednesday's 3-2 score marked the eighth time out of the last 13 meetings and the ninth in the last 16 match-ups to be determined by one run.
While Michigan State and Notre Dame have split the last 10 meetings, the Spartans have won 16 of last 25 match-ups and still lead the all-time series, 84-62 overall, including 41-27 in East Lansing.
MSU is now 14-24 on the season, while UND moves to 18-18, as the Irish snapped a three-game losing skid.Â
Notre Dame scored all three of its runs in the top of the first, while Michigan State plated a pair of runs in the home half of the second stanza. The Irish had 11 hits, while the Spartans had four.Â
Freshman infielder CJ Deckinga was 1-for-4 with a two-run single in the second inning, while junior infielder Ryan McKay was also 1-for-4 with a run scored. Junior outfielder Parker Picot was 1-for-2 with a double in the fourth, after reaching on getting hit by a pitch in the second. Fellow junior outfielder Isaac Sturgess was also 1-for-4. Sophomore outfielder Khamaree Thomas scored a run after reaching on a leadoff walk in the second.
On the mound, freshman starter Brady Chambers was dealt the loss after spraying three runs on two hits in the first. Senior Andrew Siler (0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB), senior Ben Kochany (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K), junior Logan Pikur (1.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K), junior Gannon Grundman (2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K), senior Tommy Szczepanski (1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K) and senior Nolan Higgins (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) finished it off.
The Irish got on the board in their first at bat, plating three runs on three hits, taking advantage of one MSU error and one Spartan pitching change in the frame for an early 3-0 lead.
Â
MSU cut the gap to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the home half of the second as Thomas led off with a walk. Two batters later, McKay laid down a bunt single down the third-base line and moving Thomas to second. Deckinga delivered a two-run single to right, that was misplayed by the Notre Dame right fielder and Deckinga moved up to second.
That would be the last of the scoring for either team, as both the Spartan and Irish defenses would batten down the hatches from there on, and neither offense scored the rest of the night.Â
