Spartans Topped By Terps In Friday Night Slugfest

MSU and Maryland slug it out in game one of weekend series.
After light rain fell all afternoon before shifting to heavy rain pre-game, weather cleared in time for the tarp to be pulled and field preps made for first pitch at the regularly scheduled start time of 6:02 p.m., and the night saw intermittent light rain off and on throughout the night.
While the rain let up, the hits and runs did not, as MSU plated 10 runs on 12 hits, while UMD had 18 runs on 17 hits.
With Friday's result, the Spartans are now 14-25 overall and 8-14 in B1G action, while the Terps move to 21-21 overall and 6-13 in conference competition.
Maryland was making its first visit to East Lansing since 2019, and the Terps made up for lost time by jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the third inning. They got on the scoreboard with a bang on a three-run home run in the Terps' first at bat, and the Spartans were down 3-0 before they'd even batted in the game.Â
"It was a tough night tonight. I mean, we hit the first batter of the game, and it only got worse from there," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "We walked too many guys. We gave up 17 hits and 18 runs, and that's no way to win a ball game. We did have two big innings, but we just didn't play well enough. We know we need to be better tomorrow."
UMD added four more runs in the second and another run in the third to take an 8-0 lead.
Â
The Spartan bats got going in a big way in the third, scoring five runs on four hits and taking advantage of a Terps' error, closing to 8-5.
Â
Maryland added another run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to cap five-straight stanzas scoring runs and open a 12-5 advantage.
Â
MSU mounted its comeback in the bottom of the sixth with four runs to close to 12-9.
Â
Maryland then added six run in the top of the eighth to open an 18-9 lead, before MSU scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to reach double figures at 18-10, but that would be the closest the home team would would get to end the game, as the Spartans fought to the 27th and final out.Â
"Overall, the efforts been there, and it's been really good every day," Boss said. "It's a high character group of guys. They play hard, they love playing for Michigan State. So, the efforts never been a problem. We just know that we've got to play better."

Graduate catcher Noah Bright led the Spartans at the plate as one of four players with multiple hits, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Bright knocked an RBI single in the third, a two-run double in the sixth and another RBI single in the eighth.
Sophomore outfielder Isaac Sturgess batted leadoff for the first time this season and went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior outfielder Parker Picot was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, with both hits going for doubles. Freshman infielder CJ Deckinga was 2-for-4, with a single and a double, adding a walk. Sophomore outfieler Khamaree Thomas was 1-for-5 with two runs scored, reaching on an error and later scoring in the third, and an RBI single in a sixth, adding a stolen base and later scoring. Junior designated hitter Trent Rice was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
On the mound, graduate starter JD Greeley was dealt the loss after going 1.0 IP (2 H, 6 R, 2 BB), before turning the ball over to freshman Bobby Crane (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K), freshman Kyle Rudolph (2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 K), freshman Andrew Everson (3.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K), senior Josh Klug (0.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 BB) and redshirt-freshman Brady Chambers (1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 K).
