Spartan Crews Complete Sarasota 2K Regatta

East Lansing Mich, -- Michigan State wrapped up its opening weekend of rowing in Sarasota on Saturday, with four of five crews competing in Petite Finals at the Sarasota 2K.  Racing at Nathan Benderson Park started early Saturday, just after 8 am.Â

The varsity eight finished fifth in the petite final in the final race of the day for MSU. The Spartans finished behind fourth-place Boston College, clocking 7:07.56,  but had an open-water margin over Kansas. The Second Varsity Eight was sixth in the petite final, in a time of 7:32.19. MSU was in contact with both Tulsa and Kansas at the finish, about three seats back. The Varsity Four race featured MSU and Drexel vying for third place. At the finish, the Spartans crossed the line in 8:40.59, as both crews were open water over fifth-place High Point.Â

MSU's novice eight (3V) was third in the Petite Final of that boat class. Miami took the win in the race, with Jacksonville just over a length over the Spartans at the finish, with MSU clocking in a time of 7:33.15.Â

MSU's second varsity four produced a fourth-place finish in the petite final 7:49.34, nearly in a dead heat with third-place Jacksonville – the Spartans were 0.4 seconds behind the Dolphins at the finish. Both Jacksonville and MSU were in contact with second-place Drexel (7:45.68) SMU won the race, a length ahead of the Dragons.Â
The Spartans are back on the water next Saturday at Eastern Michigan. The squads will race on Ford Lake in Ypsilanti. Â
