Balanzategui Leads Spartans as MSU Sits Fifth at Briars Creek Invitational

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's women's golf team is in 5th place among 15 teams after the first round of play at the Briars Creek Invitational, being played on The Golf Club at Briar's Creek in John's Island, S.C.
The Spartans shot an even-par 288 in the opening round, tying their second-best opening round of the season.
Boston College leads the field at 13-under par 275, followed by UCF (5-under par 283), Charleston (2-under par 286) and NC State (1-under par 287).
Senior Paula Balanzategui is in ninth place after the first round, shooting a 2-under par 70. Balanzategui posted five birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight. The 2-under par 70 marked her 10th even or under-par round of the season.
Senior Taylor Kehoe posted an even-par 72 on the day, placing her in 17th place. Kehoe scored her first eagle of the season on hole five, a 499-yard par-5.
Sophomore Grace Vetter and Freshman Memee Pojanalai are both tied for 23rd place after shooting a 1-over par 73 on the day. The pair recorded par or better from holes five to 13.
Senior Shannon Kennedy is in 77th place after a 7-over par 79 on the day.
Playing as an individual, Junior Ana Sofia Murcia posted a 4-over par 76, putting her in 61st place after round one.
The Spartans will wrap up the final two rounds of the Briars Creek Invitational Tuesday, with a scheduled tee time of 9:30 a.m., playing alongside NC State and Notre Dame, starting at the fourth hole.
