Women’s Golf Hosts Spartan Sun Coast Invitational Starting on Sunday

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's women's golf team plays its second event of the spring season, hosting the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational in Sarasota, Fla. starting on Sunday.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,191-yard Palm Aire Champions Course. Teams will play 36 holes on Sunday, Feb. 15 with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start and the tournament concludes on Monday, Feb. 16 (8:30 a.m. shotgun).

Katie Lu shot a 7-under par 65 to help Michigan State's women's golf team fire a tournament-best 12-under par 276 and come back from a tie for sixth place entering the final round to win the team title at last year's event … The Spartans finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a score of 4-under par 860 (297-287-276), tied for first place with Ohio State (285-291-284), who entered the final round in second place … Michigan State was crowned the team champion by a tiebreaker between each team's 5th score in the final round (Brooke Biermann of MSU shot an even-par 72, while Ohio State's fifth score was a 76) … MSU finished atop the 15-team field along with Ohio state, while Oklahoma finished in third place (3-under par 861), the College of Charleston placed fourth (1-over par 865) and Michigan rounded out the top-five teams (5-over par 869) … The Spartans' team score of 12-under par 276 was a tournament-best and team-best for the year, as well as the tied for the second-lowest 18-hole team score in program history … Biermann was the top finisher for the Spartans, finishing in eighth place at 2-under par 214 (71-71-72) … s Taylor Kehoe and Paula Balanzategui tied for 13th place at even-par 216 … Kehoe closed out with a 1-under par 71 for her 216 (73-72-71), while Balanzategui carded a 2-under par 70 (76-70-70) … Ana Sofia Murcia had her best round of the tournament on Monday with a 2-under par 70 and tied for 55th place at 9-over par 225 (77-78-70).

The Palm Aire Champions Course was designed by renowned architect Dick Wilson in 1957 and updated by architect Michael Benkusky in 2021. Palm Aire is a members only privately run club which has played host to several PGA and LPGA events over its storied history. The Club features full athletic facilities, including 36 holes of golf; the Champions Course specifically is its signature golf course and a jewel nestled in beautiful Sarasota, Fla.
