Women’s Tennis Suffers First Loss Of Season Friday In New York

Spartans drop their first match of the season in 4-1 fashion against Princeton.
NEW YORK CITY – Michigan State women's tennis dropped their first match of the season in a tough loss to Princeton Friday, Feb. 13.
The Spartans traveled to New York, N. Y. for a set of Ivy League matches this weekend, hosted by Columbia at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center, opening with a neutral court match Friday against Princeton, before facing host Columbia on Saturday.
MSU opened their weekend in the Big Apple facing off against Princeton, and the Spartans struggled to find their footing against the Tigers.
Play opened with doubles matches, and the Tigers were quick to make their mark on the courts.
No. 2 doubles was first to finish, with Spartan sophomore Amara Brahmbhatt and redshirt-junior Oriana Parkins-Godwin falling to Bella Chhiv/Eva Elbaz, 6-1.
The No. 88 ranked duo of sophomore Ellie Blackford and senior Matilde Morais followed suit, struggling against Tigers Tishey Driscoll/Pearlie Zhang and ultimately dropping their match 6-1.
With the doubles match going in Princeton's favor, MSU sophomore Nina Plihal and senior Issey Purser's match at No. 3 doubles went unfinished, standing at 4-4.
Singles matches commenced with the Spartans fighting for their chance at a win.
Purser was first to be defeated at No. 6 singles by Pearlie Zhang 6-2, 6-0.
Plihal gave the Green & White a fighting chance, securing her match against Anna Maria Fedotova 6-3, 6-2.
Redshirt-junior Hanna Tsitavets then dropped her match at No. 4 singles, in a difficult 6-1, 6-3 defeat versus Madeline Jessup.
The Tigers secured the match win at No. 2 singles against Ellie Blackford, who fell 6-4, 7-5 against Bella Chhiv.
With the match clinched in Princeton's favor, Brahmbhatt's match at No. 1 singles and Morias's match at No. 3 singles went unfinished.
The Green & White are set to face Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. in their home territory.
