No. 13 Michigan State Drops Overtime Thriller to No. 9 Michigan Sunday

Sunday was the Spartans' first overtime game since 2023.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 13 Michigan State women's basketball's sent the game to overtime before falling to No. 9 Michigan in overtime, 94-91, in front of over 11,000 fans at the Breslin Center on Sunday afternoon. A Kennedy Blair jump shot with five seconds left sent the instant classic to extra time.
The overtime game was Michigan State's first since beating Penn State on Feb. 12, 2023.
The 11,635 fans was No. 15 all-time at the Breslin Center.
The Spartans had their two-game winning streak halted, falling to 19-3 overall and 8-3 in Big Ten games. The Wolverines improve to 19-3 overall and 10-1 in league contests.

Michigan State had five players in double figures led by a double-double by Blair, who scored 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds. It was her fifth double-double of the season. Senior guard Jalyn Brown also scored 21 points, including 17 in the first half. Sophomore guard Inés Sotelo was stellar in the second half with 15 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Rashunda Jones and senior forward Grace VanSlooten scored 13 and 12 points respectively.
The Wolverines were led by Mia Holloway, who scored a game-high 26 points.
The first quarter started fast and furious with Michigan State taking an early 13-12 lead. Both teams had the hot hand early on shooting well over 50 percent in the first five minutes. The Spartans opened up a 20-16 lead with under three minutes remaining in the quarter. Michigan hit back-to-back treys to re-take the lead 24-20. Michigan State was held the final 3:31 without scoring to trail after the first quarter 25-22.
In the second quarter, the Spartans scored six-straight to take a 28-27 lead with under seven left in the half. The Wolverines used a 6-0 run to pull ahead 41-35 with 2:41 remaining. A VanSlooten bucket stopped an over three minute MSU scoring drought. The Spartans ended the half on a 7-0 scoring of their own to lead at the break 42-41.
Michigan used an early third quarter 9-0 run to take a 52-44 lead. Despite making six-straight baskets, MSU fought to regain the lead. Another Emma Shumate trey, made it a 64-62 Michigan advantage with under a minute left in the period. Michigan State scored six points in 1:31 to re-take the lead 65-64 at the end of the period.
The battle continued in the fourth quarter. The Spartans never led but were able to tie the score four times. Michigan took as big a lead as five points in regulation and MSU continued to battle back. With 58 seconds left in regulation, Syla Swords hit a three to put U-M on top 81-77. A pair of Jones free throws made it a two-point game with 39 seconds left, leading to Blair's game-tying shot.
In overtime, Michigan took as big a lead as seven points to take control. Sotelo scored the final four points of the game, but the Spartans couldn't get any closer.
The Spartans remain at home and will take on No. 12 Maryland on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
