B1G Wrestling Continues Against No. 11 Illinois

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling continues B1G dual action on Friday, January 16 taking on No. 11-ranked Illinois at Jenison Field House at 7:00 p.m. Friday night's dual will be streamed on B1G+.
The First Whistle
Two Spartans appear in FloWrestling's rankings this week. Weiand moves to #31 at 133 pounds despite behind the lone Spartan to record a win in last week's dual against Michigan. Redshirt junior Kael Wisler moved up one spot to #28 at 197 pounds. Wisler is the only Spartan to appear in the InterMat rankings, checking in at #29.
Michigan State is 3-3 on the season in duals and is looking to bounce back from a 43-3 loss to Michigan on January 9. MSU leads the all-time series against Illinois with a 41-22-4 record which includes a 29-10 win over the Illini in its last meeting on Feb 2, 2024. Illinois is 7-3 overall in duals but 0-1 in Big Ten play following a 27-9 loss to Minnesota last weekend.
Redshirt junior heavyweight James Campbell is among the nation's leaders in wins by fall this season and appears in this week's dual probables for the first time this season. Campbell has tallied eight wins by fall against Division I opponents across a multitude of tournaments which ranks him #8 nationally in wins by fall. Campbell only has one win this season that wasn't via pin.
Weiand is 4-2 since moving up to the 133-pound weight class, including wins over a pair of ranked opponents at the Southern Scuffle. He defeated Michigan's Gauge Botero last week by decision, 9-6, to earn his first dual win of the year.
