EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey was victorious in its 2025 home opener on Friday afternoon, taking down Bellarmine, 2-1, at Ralph Young Field.
The Spartans improve to 2-1 on the season ahead of a trip to Burlington, Vermont next weekend to face Vermont and Merrimack (neutral site). Bellarmine falls to 0-3.
MSU got a pair of three points afternoons from senior Gracie Burns and freshman Caroline Horace. Each scored one goal and assisted on the other. Michigan State held a lopsided margin offensively taking 15 shots to just two for the Knights. MSU placed eight shots on goal to one by Bellarmine and led in penalty corners 8-to-2.
Junior goalkeeper Lyra Gavino earned her first win in goal this season to improve to 1-1 as MSU's starting netminder.
Burns got Michigan State on the board first in the 11th minute of action, collecting a bouncing ball in the front of the net off the stick of Horace and punching it past the Knights keeper for her second goal of the season.
Horace wasted no time making it 2-0 early in the second period, scoring her first career goal off a deflection in the 16th minute. Burns fired a shot on goal and Horace was there to re-direct the ball into the back of the goal.
Michigan State's defense helped keep the shutout going into halftime, stifling Bellarmine's first penalty corner opportunity of the afternoon in the 21st minute. The Knights' first shot in the 26th minute was blocked by the Spartan defense.
Bellarmine brought MSU's lead down to one in the 42nd minute scoring a goal off a penalty corner opportunity.
Five of Michigan State's corner chances came in the fourth period, but MSU was stymied by the Knights. Bellarmine got six saves from goalkeeper Kailey Workman in the contest. Alicia Hudson was the Knights' goal scorer off an assist from Brooke Buchanan.
