Field Hockey Drops Conference Opener at #8 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey dropped its Big Ten opener on the road at No. 8-ranked Michigan on Friday night, 5-0, from Phyllis Ocker Field.
MSU moves to 3-3 overall (0-1 B1G) and looks to bounce back Sunday afternoon when it travels to Oxford, Ohio to face Miami (Ohio). Michigan improves to 5-1 (1-0 B1G). The RedHawks are 4-2 on the season, defeating Bellarmine, 11-0, on Friday night. Sunday's contest will be live streamed via Chatterbox Sports.
The Wolverines held a 23-8 advantage in shots, a 13-2 edge in shots on goal and a 12-4 lead in penalty corner opportunities.
After a scoreless first period in which both sides registered just one shot, Michigan took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break and never looked back. UM scored three second-half goals, two of which came in the fourth period.
Michigan State out-shot the Wolverines 4-3 in the third period with each side tallying a shot on goal. Michigan found another gear in the fourth taking 13 shots and putting eight on goal.
Graduate student Maddie Lawlor and junior Bianca Pizano led MSU's offensive attack with two shots each. Lawlor and Pizano combined for four of eight shots by the Spartans, while Lawlor and senior Gracie Burns had one shot on goal apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Lyra Gavino made a season-high eight saves in goal for Michigan State.
