SEATTLE, Wash. - Michigan State men's soccer dropped its Big Ten opener to Washington, 2-1, at Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle late Friday night.
The Spartans fall to 3-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the Big Ten with the loss. The Huskies improve to 3-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.
"I thought it was a really high-level college soccer game with a lot of quality players on the field," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "We talked about making a play or two. There kid made a play or two, but I was really proud of the way we bounced back after going down 2-0. It was a great goal by Richie (Ludwig). Then it was just a game of inches. Two inches lower we hit the crossbar, and we are tied and feel good. I think if we play like that we will win games in the Big Ten. We have to handle a few moments a little better."
The first shot on goal of the night game from freshman midfielder Luke Spadafora in the 21st minute. The ball was safely corralled by Washington netminder Jadon Bowton.
In the 42nd minute, freshman forward Chim Okeke appeared to have put the Spartans on top 1-0 before the offisides flag went up. The play was reviewed, but the call was upheld.
In the first half, the Spartans out-shot the Huskies, 5-1. Despite the discrepancy, the game was 0-0 after 45 minutes.
In the start of the second half, the Huskies came out fast with a pair of corner kicks.
Washington finally broke throw in the 62nd minute with a goal by Charlie Kosakoff to the bottom left corner of the goal with an assist by Connor Lofy. Kosakoff was at it again in the 68th minute with his second goal of the game.
Michigan State cut the lead in half with a goal in the 70th minute to make it a 2-1 game. Junior forward Richie Ludwig took a pass from Luke Spadafora on the last side and blasted it for his first goal of the season.
The Spartans had one last chance in the 90th minute with Luke Spadafora's blast that was safely brought in by Bowton to end the game.
Michigan State out-shot Washington 11-10 overall.
The Spartans return East Lansing for their home open Big Ten opener to face Ohio State on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.Â
