Freshmen Peter Soudan and Chim Okeke were involved in all the Spartan scoring.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite strong offense performances from their freshmen, the Spartan men's soccer team fell to Ohio State in front of over 2,000 fans at DeMartin Stadium Friday night.
The Spartans fall to 3-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the Big Ten with the loss. The Buckeyes improve to 4-3-0 with the win and 1-0 in league contests.
"We are just conceding too many goals," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "Just unfortunate. To be up a goal, and to give up two in the box. We just have to get better at critical defending in the box. I think the chances were probably pretty even, but we are not defending in our box well."
In the 34th minute, Marko Borkovic was brought down just inside the penalty box. He went on to convert the penalty kick to give the Buckeyes the 1-0 lead.
Michigan State bounced back to tie the game before the half. In the 39th minute, senior midfielder Jack Guggemos found freshman forward Chim Okeke on the left side. Okeke's perfect pass found freshman midfielder Peter Soudan and got past OSU goalkeeper Max Trejo. The goal was Soudan's second of the season.
With less than a minute left in the first half, MSU senior goalkeeper Zac Kelly made a brilliant save to keep the game even after 45 minutes.
In the 60th minute, the Spartans took their only lead of the game. The two freshmen were at it again with Soudan staring the action this time. Soudan's long pass reached Okeke just outside the six-yard box. Okeke earned his first collegiate goal drilling the shot to the lower right corner to put MSU up 2-1.
Ohio State was not done adding goals less than two minutes apart. Aaron Hurge scored his first goal of the season in the 66th to tie the game at 2-2. The Buckeyes found the game-winning goal in the 67th minute from Marko Borkovic for his second goal of the night.
The Spartan faithful cheered for the equalizer in the waning minutes. Freshman midfielder Justin Cassell gave MSU its final two chances of the day.
"What a crowd. Friday night, awesome crowd," Rensing said. "We had well over 2,000 people; I think that was tremendous. Credit to our students, our community."
The Spartans close out the two-game homestand against No. 5 Indiana on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
