The Spartans start the season 0-1 and will look to rebound with a non-conference neutral site battle with Ohio on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in Louisville.
Louisville took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break before the Spartans broke through in the 36th minute on a goal off a penalty corner opportunity.
Sophomore Caro Schafer took the corner, one of the five in the game for Michigan State and four in the third period alone, before entering the field of play and slotting home a pass from junior Serena Mailhe from the near post. It's the second career goal for Schafer and the first assist of Mailhe's career.
The Cardinals added two additional goals in the third period to extend their lead to 6-1. Louisville out-shot MSU 13-6 overall and 9-4 in shots on goals. Each side had five penalty corner opportunities.
Graduate Maddie Lawlor led MSU with two shots in Friday's contest, while junior Katelyn Dulin, freshman Ella McKernan, Schafer and Mailhe added one each. Dulin, Lawlor, Schafer and McKernan tallied shots on goal. Goalkeepers junior Lyra Gavino and sophomore Ashley Herbert split time in goals recording one save each, while redshirt junior Alexa Shaffer notched a defensive save.
