Spartans Topped Twice In Twinbill By Hoosiers Monday

MSU downed by IU to wrap up altered three games in two days series.
The series between the Spartans and Hoosiers was supposed to be played Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but inclement weather with thunderstorms and rain in the Bloomington area all day Friday and Saturday postponed the weekend series to Sunday and Monday. MSU and IU took the field for a single game Sunday afternoon and a doubleheader on Monday.
After Sunday's contest was played in cold, windy, damp, misty condition with temperatures in mid-40s but were in the mid-30s with wind chill, Monday's game one started at Noon with temperatures in the upper 40s. Game two started at approximately 3 p.m. under partly sunny skies and temps in the low 50s.
Indiana won Sunday's contest, 6-4, before completing the weekend sweep by taking the twinbill, 14-2 and 18-2, both in seven-inning contests due to the run-rule.
"I'm very disappointed in how today unfolded," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I didn't think we handled the schedule change very well, and maybe that's spilled over into today. To Indiana's credit, they jumped on us right from the get-go in both games, and it's tough when you get behind by five and six runs in the first inning, and you've got to try and claw your way back into it. But at the same thing we didn't do a very good job stopping anybody after the first inning either. Again, I'm just very disappointed in how things played out today. We need to compete a little bit better than we did today and I assure you I will do everything in my power to make sure that happens on Wednesday against Central Michigan, and then moving forward against Northwestern next weekend."
With Monday's two losses, MSU is now 17-13 overall and 4-8 in B1G action, while IU improves to 18-14 overall and 9-6 in conference competition.
Game 1: Indiana 14, Michigan State 2 (7 inn.)
The Hoosiers bolted out of the gates with six runs on five hits in the first, adding a run in the second on a solo home run as the Hoosiers opened a 7-0 lead.
MSU got a run back in the top of the third as sophomore infielder Ryan McKay knocked a 2-out triple to the right-center gap, and graduate catcher Caleb Berry followed with an RBI single up the middle to get MSU on the board at 7-1.
Indiana countered with three runs in the home half of the third, adding four more in the fifth,
Michigan State plated a run in the sixth as Berry laced a 1-out single to left, then took second on a popup and third on a wild pitch, before senior outfielder Nick Williams doubled to the left-center gap to drive Berry in.
Berry and N.Williams were both 2-for-3, with an RBI apiece, while Berry added a run. McKay was 1-for-2 with a run scored. N.Williams knocked a double, now tied for second on the team with seven, and McKay had a triple, his first three-bagger of the season.
On the mound, junior starter Nolan Higgins went 2.2 IP, with two Ks, eight hits, 10 runs and three walks, and was dealt the loss, sliding to 1-3 on the year. Graduate reliever Zach Maxey went 2.1 IP with six hits, three strikeouts, four runs and no walks, while junior reliever Tommy Szczepanski threw the final 1.0 IP with one K, no hits or runs, and no walks.
Game 2: Indiana 18, Michigan State 2 (7 inn.)
Just like Monday's opener, the Hoosiers jumped out to a big lead with five runs in the first and two more in the second for an early 7-0 advantage.
The Spartans got on the board in the top of the third as freshman infielder Dayton Murphy knocked a ground-rule double, for his first extra-base hit of his collegiate career in the Green & White. N.Williams laced a single to left and Murphy darted around to score to make it 7-1.
Indiana added three runs in the home half of the third frame for a 10-1 lead, plating two more in the fourth for a 12-1 score.
The Spartans added a run in the top of the fifth when Berry led off the frame with a solo home run to center field.
Indiana tacked on five runs in the home half of the fifth and one in the sixth for the final score.
Senior catcher Noah Bright, junior infielder Randy Seymour and freshman infielder Dayton Murphy were all 2-for-3, with Murphy adding a run. Berry finished 1-for-2 with the home run, adding a walk, and was matched by sophomore outfielder Parker Picot going 1-for-2. N.Williams was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Spartan sophomore starting pitcher Gannon Grundman went 0.2 IP with five runs on two hits, with two walks and one K, and is now 1-2 with the loss. Senior Dominic Pianto (1.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 K), senior George Viebrock III (0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K), sophomore Garret Brewer (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K), redshirt-junior Noah Matheny (0.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 2 BB), graduate Tyler Horvath (0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K) and sophomore Logan Pikur (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R) finished out the day.
