Third-Seeded MSU Falls to Second-Seeded UCLA in Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals

Spartans’ conference tourney run ends after strong doubles effort and hard-fought singles battles against the Bruins.
COLUMBUS, Ohio. – Third-seeded Michigan State men's tennis team saw its Big Ten Tournament run come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling to second-seeded UCLA by a 4-0 final score.
This marked MSU's second-straight B1G Tournament semifinal run, falling in last year's semis as well.
Saturday also marked the second meeting between the Spartans and Bruins this season, with UCLA previously earning a 4-1 win during the regular-season on April 13 in Los Angeles.
MSU returned to familiar doubles lineups from Friday night's quarterfinal victory, featuring junior Ozan Baris and freshman Matthew Forbes at the top spot. Redshirt-sophomore Aristotelis Thanos paired with freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev at No. 2 doubles, while the brother duo of senior Max Sheldon and freshman Mitchell Sheldon completed the Spartan pairings.
UCLA came out strong in doubles play, securing the point as Spencer Johnson and Aadarsh Tripathi defeated Thanos and Rakhmatullayev, 6-4, and Gianluca Ballotta and Emon van Loben Sels edged out Ma. and Mi. Sheldon, 7-5. The remaining doubles match was left unfinished.
Moving into singles, the Spartans looked to rally, but the Bruins maintained their momentum.
UCLA's Spencer Johnson defeated Mi. Sheldon, 6-2, 6-3, while Kaylan Bigun added another point with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ma. Sheldon.
Giacomo Revelli then clinched the match for UCLA, topping freshman Vuk Radjenovic, 6-3, 6-4. The remaining singles matches went unfinished.
Up Next:
The Green and White will return home and prepare for NCAA Regionals which will take place on May 2-3, 2025. MSU will find out its destination when the bracket is announced on the NCAA Tournament Selection Show streamed on NCAA.com on Monday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m.
