East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State continued to show rapid progress as it has all spring, finishing its two days of racing at the Big Ten Invitational, held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
All 11 Big Ten teams, along with 12 other invited crews, participated in the invitational. The field was stacked, as 13 of the top 25 crews ranked in this week's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) poll were among the regatta field: Big Ten crews No. 3 Washington, No. 9 Rutgers, No. 12 Michigan, No. 14 Ohio State, No. 21 Indiana and No. 24 USC as well as No. 6 Tennessee, No. 7 Brown, No. 11 Penn, No. 16 Duke, No. 17 Oregon State, No. 18 Harvard/Radcliffe, and No. 20 Oklahoma.
The Spartans fielded six boats, each of which raced three times on the weekend.
The varsity eight had an outstanding weekend, having an opportunity to see where it stacked up against its fellow B1G brethren with less than a month until the Big Ten Championships as well as some of the top crews in the country. The Spartans missed a podium finish by three-tenths of a second on Friday morning (6:24.280), edged out by third-place Oregon State (6:23.929), less than a second behind second-place Ohio State (6:23.465). In the afternoon session, MSU was second to the Beavers, (6:32.687), ahead of Big Ten crews USC and Minnesota in addition to Clemson and Notre Dame. On Saturday morning, the Spartans finished first in their heat, clocked in a time of 6:36.733 – nearly a full length against second-place SMU (6:40.540) and six seconds ahead of third-place Iowa.
MSU's second varsity eight produced a strong weekend as well. The Spartans were fourth by four-tenths of a second in the first race, 1.2 seconds behind Big Ten crew UCLA (6:38.201), and Oregon State (6:38.901), with the Spartans fourth in 639.374 – ahead of Ohio State and SMU. In the afternoon, MSU was tied for fifth, with both MSU and Clemson in a dead heat in a time of 6:43.569 and rebounded with a third-place heat finish on Saturday morning in a time of 6:46.077 – behind Oklahoma and SMU but ahead of both Clemson and Iowa.
The Spartans earned fifth, sixth, and fourth place finishes, respectively, in the varsity four. On Friday morning, the Spartans were over a second faster than Oregon State for the fifth spot, and in the afternoon clocked a time of 7:47.913. On Saturday morning, the Spartans were in contact with both second place Oklahoma (7:36.715) and third-place Clemson (7:37.989) as they crossed the line in 7:38.816, open water ahead of Iowa.
MSU's third varsity eight/top novice boat had two fourth-place finishes on Friday and finished strong in its Saturday heat. On Friday, the Spartans were in contact with both Alabama (6:50.069) and USC (6:51.536), and were clocked in 6:52.172 to take fourth. In the afternoon session, Notre Dame (7:09.319) was ahead of MSU (7:10.298) by less than a second to take third place. On Saturday, MSU earned a second-place finish in a B1G-heavy field, crossing three seats behind Iowa (7:05.754-7:07.164), and ahead of Minnesota, Clemson, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.
The fourth varsity eight/second novice earned two silver-medal finishes and one third-place in an all-B1G Saturday heat. On Friday morning, MSU was ahead of Iowa by 1.3 seconds to take second (7:17.562-718.880), and ahead of Wisconsin by open water in the Friday afternoon session, in which the Spartans timed 7:24.896. On Saturday, MSU was third behind Minnesota and Iowa but ahead of the Badgers by open water once again, as the Spartans were clocked in 7:47.387.
MSU's second varsity four had a pair of fifth-place finishes on Friday, but came back and took second in its final race on Saturday (7:49.749), five seconds off the pace of race-winner Oklahoma (7:49.749) and open-water over third-place Clemson. In Friday's racing, the Spartans (7:41.981) were just over four seconds behind fourth-place UCLA (7:37.148), and in the afternoon had a similar margin behind Oregon State, clocked in a time of 7:43.774.
