Ypsilanti, Mich. -- Michigan State lined up against Eastern Michigan on Saturday morning on a windy, chilly day on Ford Lake in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Spartans earned three wins in four races.Â
An equipment issue forced a delay in the varsity eight race, but the Spartans were up to the task in handling the issues and came across the finish line in a time of 7;10.7. The hosts were 22.6 seconds behind in an open-water margin between the schools, clocked in 7:33.3.
The second varsity eight also earned its first race win of the year, finishing the 2000 meter course in a time of 7:47.7, about four lengths ahead of Eastern Michigan (8:08.5).Â
The day began with the third varsity eight, which featured several novice (first-year) rowers in each boat. The Eagles took a win in a time of 8:19.9, with the Spartans less than half a length back, 8:21.7.
MSU fielded a pair of fours to race on Saturday, as both its varsity four and second varsity four lined up with EMU. The varsity four finished in a time of 8:33.0, with the 2V4 12.1 seconds off the pace in a time of 8:45.1. The hosts finished in a time of 8:59.8.Â
Â
The Spartans will be off next weekend before heading to the west coast, where Michigan State will be the host school for the Big Ten Invitational Regatta, which will be held on Lake Natoma in Sacramento April 18-19. Information for the Big Ten Invitational can be found at sprtns.co/B1GRowingInvite
