
Small Spartan Squad Shines at Duke Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State Track & Field had four athletes competing in events at the Duke Invitational on Thursday and Friday.
Dylan Terryberry and Sean Mullen competed in the decathlon, while Leila Barmore and Avery Budz were in action in the heptathlon.
Decathlon
Terryberry set a new career-best in the decathlon, finishing fifth with 6,673 points. Mullen, competing in his first collegiate decathlon, was eighth with 5,923 points. Kent State's Ayden Bath won the competition with 7,466 points.
At the end of the first day, Terryberry stood in eighth place with 3,561 points. Sean Mullen stood in 13th place with a score of 3,075 points. Drew Thompson, who was running unattached, was in first place with 4,115 points.
Terryberry's best event was the shot put where he finished fourth with a best throw of 12.88m. He had personal bests in the 100m (11.27), long jump (6.55m) and high jump (1.84m). In his first collegiate decathlon, Mullen finished 10th in the 400m (52.05) and 11th in the shot put (10.44m).Â
On the second day, Mullen won the pole vault with a huge personal best of 4.65m. He gathered 802 points for the vault. Terryberry finished 10th in the pole vault (3.95m). Terryberry's best event was the javelin throw, which he won with a best throw of 53.58m. He earned 642 points on the throw. He was also stellar in his last event, which was the 1,500m. He took fourth, crossing the line in 4:57.85, which gave him 572 points.
Heptathlon
In the highly competitive women's heptathlon, Barmore finished 10th with 4,776 points, while Budz was 11th with 4,735. Their overall scores earned personal bests at the Duke Invitational. Katie Eidem, competing unattached, won with 5,785 points.
By the end of the first day of action in the heptathlon, Budz stood in 10th (3,072), while Barmore was 11th (3,006). Budz best finish was third place in the high jump (1.69m), which was just shy of her personal best of 1.70m. She recorded 842 points in the event. She added personal bests in the 110m hurdles (10.43), shot put (10.47m) and the 200m (25.90).
Barmore finished sixth in the high jump (1.63m), which was a new PR. She was also seventh in the 200m, running a 25.51.
On the second day, Barmore came out hot winning the long jump with a leap of 5.87m, which was good for 840 points. Budz ended strong finishing fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:22.50, which landed her in fourth place with 790 points.
The Spartans are back in action April 18-19 at the Virginia Invite in Charlottesville, Virginia.
