Kate Stewart-Barnett Leads Spartan Distance Runners at Raleigh Relays

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State track & field put its distance runners on center stage in a three-day meet at the Raleigh Relays. The Spartans were led by a standout performance from Kate Stewart-Barnett in the steeplechase.
Thursday Action
The Spartans started the day with the men's 1,500m. Timothy Cherry was the top finisher for Michigan State ending 35th with a time of 3:55.65 Owen Gilbert set a new personal best, crossing the line in  3:50.74, finishing fourth in the second heat. Patrick Byrnes also set a new PR with a time of 3:51.59.
In the men's 3,000m steeplechase, Tyler Pritchett had a standout performance for the Spartans. He finished 18th with a personal-best time of 8:51.42.
The Green and White had a pair of personal bests in the men's 5k led by Riley Hough who finished 17th with a time of 13:38. Parker Lambers set a new PR with a time of 14:00.10.
Michigan State ended the day with the 10,000m. Andrew Lane was the top finisher for the Spartans setting a new personal best with a time of 29:08.86.
Friday Action
On Saturday, Stewart-Barnett was the highlight of the day. She set a new personal best in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:36.96, which was the second-best time in Michigan State history. Overall, she finished second in the race. The only Spartan with a better time is All-American Leah O'Connor who ran 9:33.38 in 2015.
In the women's 1,500m, Rachel Forsyth made her outdoor track & field debut. She finished an impressive seventh in 4:16.01. Sarah Forsyth finished 20th with a time of 4:19.56 in her first outdoor collegiate 1,500m.
Kaitlyn Hynes led the way for the Spartans in the women's 5,000m, setting a new PR with a time of 16:04.73 to finish 26th. Makenna Veen also set a new personal best, crossing the line in 16:20.09.
The Spartans rounded out Saturday with the 10,000m. Fatima Giron was MSU's stop finisher with a time of 35:29.91 to finish 46th.Â

The Spartans ended the Raleigh Relays with the men's and women's 800m. In the women's race, Shae Harbaugh finished ninth with a time of 2:06.13. Harbaugh was just off her career-best of 2:06.09 set at the Big Ten Outdoor Championship last season. Rachel Forsyth ran her first 800m of her college career, finishing 14th with a time of 2:06.73. Sarah Forsyth also had a solid showing  in her first collegiate 800m with a time of 2:09.30.
