MSU completes first sweep of season, boosted by three four-run frames.
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 23 Michigan State baseball used three four-run innings to open a 12-0 advantage, and coasted to a 13-3 Victory for MSU over Harvard in seven-innings due to the run-rule for the third time in as many games and complete the sweep Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field, home of the Greenville Drive.
With Sunday's win, Michigan State improved to 9-1 for the first time since 2016, as the Spartans swept their first series of the season, winning all three games this weekend by run-rule in scoring 14, 11 and 13 runs in the three games. Harvard slides to 0-6 with the loss.
"It was a good day today, and a great way to finish off the weekend," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said.
Sunday was the ninth all-time meeting between the Spartans and Crimson, including the sixth-straight played in Greenville. MSU now leads the overall series, 8-1, including 5-1 in games played in Greenville.
Michigan State came into the weekend with one home run through the first seven games of the season, but the Spartans bashed nine home runs in the three games against Harvard, including three on Sunday. The Green & White had seven total hits on the day, with nearly half of them going yard. MSU also drew nine walks and six hit-by-pitches, along with swiping seven stolen bases.
"I'm proud of our guys again for taking advantage of opportunities that we were given. We got off to a really good start in the first with the home runs, and I thought our guys were ready to play today, and we knew we would get a good effort out of Harvard. Those guys do play hard, and they're a little banged up over there, and so, fortunately for us, I think their injuries really kind of helped us out as far as depth is concerned."
Senior infielder Sam Busch and Caleb Berry went back-to-back blasts in the first frame, then junior infielder Randy Seymour smacked a grand slam in the third inning for his first homer of the season.
"I'm proud of our guys for getting the barrel to the ball early, getting on base a lot, and the big grand slam from Randy was really good," Boss said.
Berry finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore infielder Ryan McKay was 1-for-2 with three runs scored, drawing three walks. Busch finished 1-for-3 with the three RBI and one run scored, while Seymour was 1-for-4 with the four RBI and one run scored. Sophomore catcher Adam Broski was 1-for-2 with an RBI coming off the bench.
Senior outfielder Nick Williams was hit-by-pitch twice and reached on an error on a sac fly, for one RBI and three runs scored without an official at-bat, adding two stolen bases. Senior outfielder JT Sokolove added a stolen base and a run scored, while McKay also swiped two bags, while Berry, junior outfielder Jake Dresselhouse and senior designate hitter Christian Williams also had a stolen base apiece.
On the mound, freshman Aidan Donovan continued his solid start as a college pitcher, going 4.0 IP with three Ks and only one hit, as he now 10.0 IP in three appearance and two starts with only six hits and no runs allowed.
"I thought Aiden Donovan really threw well today, he did what we needed him to do," Boss said.
Sophomore Tate Farquhar went 1.0 IP, with two Ks, three hits and three runs, while graduate reliever Tyler Horvath fired 1.0 IP with two Ks, one hit and no runs, and sophomore reliever Logan Pikur finished it out with the final 1.0 IP with one K and one hit.
MSU bolted out of the gates with four runs in the first frame, including back-to-back home runs by Busch and Berry, with Busch blasting a three-run round tripper to right field, and Berry followed with a solo shot to right center, nearly to the same spot as his first homer of the season on Friday night.
After a scoreless second stanza, N.Williams started off the third by getting hit-by-pitch, then stole second. Two batters later, Berry was also hit. After a Harvard pitching change, N.Williams and Berry executed a double-steal, then junior outfielder Jake Dresselhouse was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Seymour came to the plate and cleared the bases with a grand-slam home run to left center, the Spartans' second grand slam of the weekend, for an 8-0 lead.
MSU continued its four-score in an inning in the fourth, plating four run on just two hits, taking advantage of two Harvard errors, and leaving the bases loaded when the rally ended and a 12-0 Spartan advantage. Berry provided the big blow with a two-run single to center.
Harvard got on the board with three runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 12-3.
McKay sparked the rally in the seventh, leading off with a single. Senior designated hitter Christian Williams drew a walk to move McKay to second, and senior pinch hitter Will Shannon followed with a flyout to right, and McKay tagged up to third. Broski came to bat and knocked an infield single to drive in McKay for the run-rule "walk-off" and the Victory For MSU.
