Trio of Spartans Head to NCAA Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Three Michigan State wrestlers will compete at the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia later this week at Wells Fargo Arena. Redshirt freshmen Caleb Weiand, Remy Cotton and Max Vanadia are all first-time qualifiers for the Spartans, leading a youth movement throughout the program this season.
Action in Philadelphia gets started at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 20 and continues through Saturday, March 22. Bouts throughout the week will be streamed and televised on ESPN+, ESPNU, ESPN2 and ESPN. Thursday's first session will be televised on ESPNU and stream on ESPN+, while Thursday's second session will broadcast on ESPN and stream on ESPN+.

Redshirt freshman 125-pounder Caleb Weiand placed eighth at the B1G Championships to solidify his spot in Philly. Weiand defeated Maryland's Tyler Garvin (5-0) before knocking off then No. 15-ranked Joey Cruz of Iowa (10-5) in wrestlebacks.
Weiand is the #33 seeded wrestler at 125 and will wrestle in the opening pigtail bout against Cornell's Milani Marcello (15-12).
Redshirt freshman 197-pounder Remy Cotton placed 10th at the B1G Championships to earn the final automatic qualifier at the weight from the conference. Cotton defeated Purdue's Ben Vanadia (13-6) in wrestlebacks to secure the final spot. Cotton was a breakout performer for the Spartans in 2024-25 entering this weekend ranked #22 by FloWrestling and #25 by InterMat at 197 pounds.
Cotton is the #31 seeded wrestler at 197 and will take on Iowa's Stephen Buchanan (21-1) in round one.
Redshirt freshman heavyweight Max Vanadia placed eighth at the B1G Championships to join Weiand as a day one NCAA qualifier alongside Weiand. Vanadia qualified for NCAA's after earning a 17-6 major decision over Northwestern's Dirk Morley in wrestlebacks. Rutgers' Yaraslou Slavikouski medically forfeited out of B1Gs which allowed Vanadia to earn the auto-bid.
Vanadia is the #31 seeded wrestler at heavyweight and will take on Oklahoma State's Wyatt Hendrickson (22-0) in the first round.
Under ninth-year head coach Roger Chandler, the Spartans have a best finish of 30th at the NCAA Championships in 2020. Rayvon Foley is MSU's last All-American, placing seventh at 125 pounds in 2019.
