EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling honored its five graduating seniors on Sunday afternoon prior to a 30-8 thumping of Clarion inside historic Jenison Field House.
The Spartans celebrated the careers of Tristan Lujan, Andy Hampton, Jay Nivison, Marty Larkin and Nick West, with all three seniors in Sunday's lineup (Lujan, Nivison, Larkin) winning their respective bouts.
A win improves Michigan State's overall dual record to 4-5 while Clarion falls to 3-10. The Spartans return to B1G action next weekend on the road heading to Northwestern for a Friday night dual before traveling to Wisconsin for a Sunday afternoon tilt.
Lujan, who missed a month of action due to injury, put Michigan State on the board at 133 following a 7-0 decision over Mason Prinkey using a pair of takedowns in the second and third periods.
A major decision at 141 put Clarion ahead 8-3 in team score, but the dual was all Michigan State from there on out.
Redshirt freshman Clayton Jones III cut the deficit to 8-6 following a 14-7 decision at 149 pounds. Michigan State took an 11-8 lead into intermission following a tech fall by redshirt sophomore Braden Stauffenberg at 157. Stauffenberg earned a takedown and four near-fall in the third period to wrap up the bonus point victory.
Nivison kept the momentum going for MSU out of the intermission picking up his first dual victory in the Green & White at 165 pounds, earning a 7-2 decision over Wesley Barnes. Larkin made the most of his first dual appearance for Michigan State this season earning a 15-0 tech fall in the opening period. Larkin took the mat on senior day in place of redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza, who opted to put on the commentary headset for a pair of bouts.
Redshirt junior Luke Daly secured the dual victory for MSU at 184 with a 5-0 decision win over Adrian Gacek, extending Michigan State's lead to 22-8. That lead would extend even more at 197 where redshirt freshman Remy Cotton posted a 19-4 tech fall of Ethan Wiant. Cotton snapped a two-match losing skid in bonus point fashion, his fourth dual victory by bonus this season.
At heavyweight, redshirt freshman Max Vanadia closed things out with a 4-0 shutout over Austin Chapman, one of four times a Spartan held their opponent scoreless on Sunday.
