Wrestling Drops B1G Dual at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – Michigan State wrestling was on the road Friday night, falling to Northwestern in B1G dual action, 27-12, from Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Michigan State moves to 4-6 overall (0-5 B1G) while Northwestern improves to 3-6 (1-5 B1G). The Spartans will look to pick up their first conference victory on Sunday when they travel to Madison, Wis. for a 1:00 p.m. ET dual against Wisconsin (4-9, 0-5 B1G).
Redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza got things started with bonus points for the Spartans, his first B1G dual win by bonus this season. Garza led 7-1 heading into the third where he added two additional takedowns and picked up the riding time point to win 14-3 over Aiden Vandenbush.
Northwestern took bouts at 184 and 197 pounds to lead 9-4 in team score going into the heavyweight match.
Redshirt freshman Max Vanadia made it look easy at heavyweight scoring a tech fall over Dirk Morley. Vanadia played catch and release with four first period takedowns before tallying an escape, two takedowns and a stall point in the second to end the bout in 4:30.
The Wildcats claimed five straight victories at 125, 133, 141, 149 and 157 pounds to secure the dual victory up 27-9.
In the final match of the night, graduate student Jay Nivison earned his first career B1G dual victory in sudden victory. Nivison trailed 3-1 late in the first before a takedown near the edge of the mat put him ahead 4-3 heading to period two. A pair of Nivison escapes tied the bout at 6-6 with :38 seconds remaining in the second.
After a scoreless third period Nivison went to sudden victory where he tallied a takedown 45 seconds into the period after winning a scramble. Half of Nivison's eight dual appearances this season have been decided in extra time.
