Spartan Wrestling Set for Home Dual Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling will take on American for its home opening dual inside historic Jenison Field House on Thursday, December 18 at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night's dual will stream on B1G+
The First Whistle
Michigan State has three wrestlers in the rankings this week, led by redshirt sophomore heavyweight Max Vanadia who is the lone Spartan in both the InterMat and FloWrestling polls. Vanadia ranks #27 by InterMat and #30 by FloWrestling. Vanadia is one of two returning NCAA qualifiers for the Spartans and is a spotless 4-0 in dual meets this season. Vanadia leads the team with 17 team points in his four dual wins. Earlier this season Vanadia placed 2nd at the Keystone Classic and 4th at the MSU Open. Vanadia owns a win over current #19 David Szuba of Arizona State, winning 11-8 in sudden victory.
Redshirt junior 197-pounder Kael Wisler is ranked #30 by InterMat this week. Wisler's 10 wins are second on the team thus far and he's 3-1 in duals contributing 12 team points. Wisler was the 197-pound champion at the Keystone Classic and took 2nd at the MSU Open earlier this season. Wisler has won six straight bouts entering this week's dual against American.
Redshirt freshman 157-pounder Darius Marines is ranked #32 by InterMat this week. Marines is tied for the team-high with 12 wins overall and is 4-0 in duals with 12 team points. He placed 4th at the MSU Open and 5th at the Keystone Classic. Marines owns a 3-1 win over then #33 ranked Brayden Roberts of LIU and has won 9 of his last 10 bouts entering Thursday's dual against American.
Vanadia and redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Caleb Weiand are the returning NCAA qualifiers for the Spartans this season. Weiand took 2nd at the MSU Open and was 6th at the Keystone Classic. Weiand is currently tied for the team lead in wins by fall with four (Clayton Jones, 4).
New to Michigan State is transfer 174-pounder Connor O'Neill who joins the Spartans from Rutgers this season. O'Neill missed the last two season due to injury, but was an NCAA qualifier for the Scarlet Knights in 2022. O'Neill is 3-1 in duals for the Spartans this season and took 7th place at the Keystone Classic.
Last Time Out
Michigan State is coming off of a 2-0 weekend in early December in which they defeated Gardner-Webb (23-11) and The Citaldel (21-14). The Spartans used those two victories to improve to 3-1 in duals this season.
