
Four in Double Figures Pushes MSU Past Eastern Michigan Sunday

Michigan State improves to 2-0 on the year.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four Spartans reached double figures, as the Michigan State women's basketball team defeated in-state Eastern Michigan, 92-60, Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Center.
The Spartans also used suffocating defense to keep the Eagles off the board. Michigan State forced 30 turnovers with 15 steals. MSU scored 36 points of off turnovers.
With the victory, Michigan State improves to 2-0 this season for the 11th-straight season and the third-straight under head coach Robyn Fralick. After a busy week, Eastern Michigan falls to 1-2.
Senior forward Grace VanSlooten, junior guard Rashonda Jones and senior guard Jalyn Brown led the Spartans in scoring with 15 points each. Jones and Brown have both reached double figures in their first two games in the Green and White. For the second-straight game, VanSlooten has tied her career-high with five steals. Senior guard Theryn Hallock was the last Spartan in double figures with 14 points and four assists.
The Eagles were led by 18 points from Sisi Eleko.
Both teams got off to slow starts on the offensive end of the floor with the Spartans missing five-straight before a Marah Dykstra trey put MSU on top 5-2 with under seven minutes left in the quarter.The Eagles took their only lead of the game 6-5 after a Hill layup at the 5:42 mark. The MSU offense began to warm up making four of five buckets to take a 15-10 lead. MSU ended the first period leading 19-15.
In the second quarter, MSU used a 15-0 run to take 37-20 lead with just under six minutes left in the half. The Eagles went 3:09 without scoring before a pair of Believe Tshibangu free throws stopped the drought. The Spartans used another 9-0 run to take a 46-26, which was its first 20-point lead of the game. Michigan State forced six turnovers in 3:43 to end the half.
The Green and White continued to apply defensive pressure in the second half. The Spartan lead did not dip below 20 points in the third period. VanSlooten found her footing in the third period with five points, three rebounds and two steals. Redshirt-sophomore guard Kennedy Blair scored all six of her points in the third quarter, as seven different players scored in the 10-minute frame.
Dykstra's trey put the Spartans on the board to start the fourth quarter. MSU took its first 30-point advantage, 77-45 after the Dykstra 3-pointer with 9:25 left on the clock. Sophomore guard Juliann Woodard returned to the MSU lineup after tearing her ACL on Jan. 22, 2025. With her first shot, she drained a trey to make the Spartan bench erupt.
Michigan State will continue its six-game homestand to start the season against Youngstown State on Wednesday, Nov.12 at 6:30 p.m.

- The Spartans have opened the season 2-0 for the third time in as many seasons under head coach Robyn Fralick. Michigan State also opened 2-0 for the 11th-straight season since going 1-1 to open the 2014-15 season.
 - Michigan State used the same starting lineup for the second-straight game of senior Grace VanSlooten, senior forward Marah Dykstra, senior guard Threryn Hallock, junior guard Rashunda Jones and redshirt-sophomore guard Kennedy Blair.
 - The Spartans improved to 21-3 overall against Eastern Michigan, including seven in a row. Last season, MSU defeated the Eagles at home 95-49. Last season, Theryn Hallock led the Spartans with 18 points.
 - The Spartans took advantage of 30 Eastern Michigan turnovers. MSU was able to scored 36 points off of turnovers compared to nine by Eastern Michigan. The Michigan State defense was tough with 15 steals. MSU had 24 steals in the season opener against Mercyhurst.
 - After tearing her ACL on Jan. 22, 2025 against Penn State, Juliann Woodard returned to the lineup against the Eagles. Woodard entered the game at the 3:46 mark of the fourth quarter. At the 3:39 point, she drained her first shot, which was a 3-pointer. Her trey gave the Spartans a 32-point advantage.
