No. 22 Michigan State Hosts Colgate in 2025-26 Season Opener on Monday Night

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's basketball team opens the 2025-26 season against Colgate University on Monday, Nov. 3 (7 p.m.) at the Breslin Center. The Spartans open the season ranked No. 22 in the Associated Press preseason poll and No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches poll.
The game will be streamed on B1G+, with Jack Stager handling the play-by-play, Joe Dez serving as the color analyst and Oliviah Klinski on sidelines. - Michigan State finished the 2024-25 season with a 30-7 overall record, including a 17-3 mark in the Big Ten Conference, winning the league's regular season title by three games.
- It was the 11th time Big Ten regular season title under Head Coach Tom Izzo.
- The Spartans were selected to the NCAA Tournament for the 27th-straight season and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time, finishing the year ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press Top 25.

- The Spartans will look to replace three starters and four letterwinners who accounted for 63.5 percent of the team's scoring last year, 41.8 percent of the team's rebounds and 52.3 percent of the team's assists … Notable losses included guards Jaden Akins (All-Big Ten Third Team, All-Defensive Team) and Jase Richardson (All-Big Ten Third Team, All-Freshman Team).
- The cupboard is not bare, by any stretch, as the team welcomes back senior forward Jaxon Kohler and redshirt sophomore point guard Jeremy Fears Jr., as well as a talented group of returning players and newcomers.
- Kohler started 34 of 37 games last year, averaging 7.8 ppg and was among the top-10 in rebounding in the Big Ten (7.5 rpg), while Fears started 36 times, averaging 7.2 ppg, was third in the Big Ten in assists (5.4 apg) and was No. 8 nationally in assist rate (38.9%).
- The Spartans also welcome back junior forward Coen Carr, one of the most athletic players in all of college basketball … He averaged 8.1 ppg and 3.6 rpg last year, along with senior center Carson Cooper, who added 5.0 ppg and 5.2 rpg.
- Sophomore guard Kur Teng and redshirt freshman forward Jesse McCulloch are expected to play significant minutes in the rotation this coming year.
- Teng appeared in 19 games last year as a freshman, averaging 3.1 minutes per contest, while McCulloch was a key part of MSU's scout team during the run to the Elite Eight.
- The Spartans played a pair of exhibition games ahead of the 2025-26 season, beating Bowling Green, 75-66, at the Breslin Center on October 23, and then falling to preseason No. 4 UConn, 76-69, at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford last Tuesday (Oct. 28).
- In the opener, junior forward Coen Carr scored a team-high 17 points to lead three players in double figures ... Carr hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor to finish with 17 points, adding five rebounds, five blocked shots and four assists ... Senior center Jaxon Kohler had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and redshirt sophomore guard Jeremy Fears Jr. added 12 points and a game-high nine assists.
- At UConn on Tuesday, four players scored in double figures for MSU, with Fears leading the way with 14 points and six assists ... Senior center Carson Cooper had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Kohler had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and Carr finished with 11 points and two rebounds.
- Colgate closed the 2024-25 season with a 14-19 overall record, including a 10-8 mark in the Patriot League.
- Under the direction of Head Coach Matt Langel, who played at Penn from 1996-2000, the Raiders have won the Patriot League six times and advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times.
- Colgate was picked to finish in third place this year.
- The Raiders are led by junior guard Jalen Cox, who is the team's top returning scorer from last year when he averaged 11.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists and was named to the All-Patriot League Third Team.
- Colgate lost three players to graduation last year and welcome four freshmen and a transfer, sophomore guard Ben Tweedy, who spent his freshman year at Wisconsin-Green Bay, averaging 5.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg and 2.2 apg.
- Monday's game will be the seventh all-time meeting between Michigan State and Colgate, the previous six games all coming between 1929 and 1933.
- Michigan State leads the all-time series with the Raiders and has won the last five games, the last a 40-26 win in Hamilton, N.Y. on Jan. 17, 1993.
- The Spartans are 2-0 at home against the Raiders, the last victory a 29-28 decision at home on Jan. 30, 1932.
- Colgate's lone win in the series was a 36-35 decision at home on Feb. 1, 1929.
