Four in Double Figures as No. 22 Michigan State Uses Late Run to Pull Away from Colgate, 80-69

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Four players scored in double figures and No. 22 Michigan State used a run late in the second half to open a 14-point lead and went on to an 80-69 win over Colgate in the season opener for both schools at the Breslin Center Monday night.
Senior forward Jaxon Kohler led Michigan State with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, while redshirt sophomore guard Jeremy Fears Jr. had a double-double with 14 points and tying his career-high with 10 assists while setting a career-best with five steals.
Junior forward Coen Carr finished with 12 points and four rebounds and senior center Carson Cooper added 10 points and six rebounds.

- Michigan State took an early lead in the first half and led by six points four times but went into the second half with just a 37-34 lead.
 - The Raiders tied the game at 39-all on a 3-pointer from Brady Cummins and the game was tied again at 41-all on a jumper from Andrew Alekseyenko with 16:23 to play in the game.
 - With just over 13 minutes to play, the Spartans led by just two points, 47-45, when senior guard Trey Fort was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and hit all three shots to push the lead to five points, 50-45.
 - That was the start of a 15-2 run over 4:22 with Michigan State taking its biggest lead of the game, 62-47, on a free throw from Cooper after two dunks from Carr and a jumper from Kohler.
 - Colgate quickly cut the lead back to seven points, 62-55, but a 9-2 MSU capped by a layup from Kohler and free throws from freshman forward Jordan Scott pushed the lead back to 15 points, 72-57, with just over four minutes left and the Raiders did not get within nine points the rest of the way.
 - Michigan State didn't hit a 2-point basket for the first 12-plus minutes, had more free throws (17-of-22) than field goals (7-of-20), committed eight turnovers, saw UConn score 16 points off those and still went into halftime trailing by just 11 points.

 - The Spartans went into the half by just three points, 37-34, after a 3-pointer from Colgate's Brady Cummins with one second left.
 - MSU had jumped out to an early 8-3 lead after back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomore guard Kur Teng and Kohler and extended its lead to seven points, 13-6, on a layup from Fears at the 13:58 mark.
 - Colgate took advantage of missed shots from the Spartans and crept back in, using a 7-1 run to pull within 14-13 on a 3-poitner from Josh Ahayere.
 - Michigan State pushed its lead to six points on four occasions, including late at 37-31 on free throws from Fears with 1:15 left before Colgate cut the lead to 37-34.
 
- Michigan State had a 47-25 advantage in rebounding and collected 19 offensive rebounds.
 - The Spartans finished with 20 second-chance points.
