This Week In Spartan Athletics – October 21
Here's a look at the week ahead (October 21-27) for Michigan State Athletics:
Football
Michigan State hosts Michigan Saturday night (7:30 p.m.) at Spartan Stadium. It's the 118th meeting all-time between the Spartans and the Wolverines.
Women's Soccer
Michigan State closes out the regular season Sunday at Nebraska. The Spartans currently sit in second place in the Big Ten. The Big Ten Tournament starts next week with the top six seeds beginning Nov. 1 and 2 at Purdue. MSU is ranked No. 9 in the NCAA women's soccer RPI rankings.
Women's Basketball
Michigan State opens the 2025-26 season with an exhibition contest against Michigan Tech, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Spartans are ranked No. 23 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls.
Men's Basketball
Michigan State hosts Bowling Green Thursday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition contest. The two teams met last year in the regular season, with the Spartans taking an 86-72 victory. MSU opens the year ranked No. 22 in the Associated Press Top 25.
Hockey
Following a road sweep of No. 1 Boston University, the Spartans are on top of the national polls. This week, the No. 1 Spartans are on the road for a second-straight weekend, traveling to Michigan's Upper Peninsula to play at Northern Michigan on Friday and Saturday.
Field Hockey
Michigan State takes to the road for its final trip of the regular season. Thursday, the Spartans are in Iowa City to face the Hawkeyes, followed by a Sunday contest at Indiana. Last Sunday, MSU rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat No. 12 Ohio State, 4-3, at Ralph Young Field. It marked the first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Volleyball
The Spartans take a 15-3 overall record, including 5-3 in Big Ten play, on the road for a pair of matches this weekend. Friday, MSU is at Iowa, followed by a Saturday contest at No. 1 Nebraska. The Spartans and the Huskers met last Friday at Breslin Center, with a program-record crowd of 11, 578 fans in attendance.
Men's Soccer
The Spartans take a brief break from conference play, hosting Kansas City Sunday at 1 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. It's Alumni Day and Senior Celebration, as Michigan State will welcome back MSU men's soccer alumni, while honoring the Spartan seniors postgame.
Cross Country
Members of the men's and women's cross country teams will compete Friday at the Eastern Michigan Invite on Oct. 24. Last Friday, the squads competed at the highly competitive Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. In a race featuring 16 ranked teams, the men finished seventh, while the women finished 15th in a race including 19 ranked squads.
