EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey junior goalkeeper Lyra Gavino was named Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. It's the second B1G weekly honor of Gavino's career.
Gavino helped lead the Spartans to a pair of wins last week, including MSU's first Big Ten victory of the season in a 4-3 upset over then No. 12-ranked Ohio State last Sunday.
The New Malden, England native tallied 15 saves for the Spartans in games against Ball State and Ohio State, making 10 in the win over OSU. Her 10 saves against the Buckeyes ranks in the Top 10 for saves this season by a Big Ten goalkeeper as she helped thwart 11 of 12 Buckeye penalty corner attempts.
Gavino posted a .789 save percentage for the week and held Ball State scoreless for the first 41 minutes of last Tuesday's contest in which MSU won, 5-1. Her 89 total saves this season rank second in the Big Ten.
