Spartan Women's Tennis Wraps Up Spring Home-Opening Weeking in Winning Style

MSU commands the courts in 6-1 victory over West Virginia
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis wrapped up its spring season home-opening weekend with a 6-1 win against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
The Spartans opened play at 10 a.m. with the doubles pairing of senior Liisa Vehvilainen and freshman Ellie Blackford, junior Matilde Morais and redshirt-sophomore Hanna Tsitavets and junior Issey Purser and redshirt-sophomore Oriana Parkins-Godwin taking to the courts.
The number three doubles pairing of Purser/Parkins-Godwin were first to clinch their match, in a dominating 6-1 win.
The senior/freshman tandem of Vehvilainen/Blackford secured the doubles point for the Spartans, going 6-4 against their West Virginian opponents at number one doubles.
With the point clinched for the Spartans, Morais/Tsitavets did not finish their match.
Singles kicked off with the Green & White dominating in all of their matches.
First to finish was freshman Amara Brahmbhatt in a victory at 6-0, 6-3. The freshman had a successful weekend, slating two singles victories in the Spartans' home opener.
Tsitavets followed suit, dominating at number six singles in a 6-0, 6-2 triumph.
Adding an additional point to the Spartans' total was Morais, going 6-1, 6-2 in her match.
With the match clinched, it was down to Blackford, Purser and Vehvilainen finishing their singles matches.
Vehvilainen took her match 6-2, 6-2, putting up a fierce contest at number one singles and dominating on the court.
While freshman Blackford put up an intense competition, she was unable to pull off a win.
Last to finish was Purser. After trailing in her first set, 3-6, Purser rallied in her second set, going 6-4. Instead of going to a third set, Purser and her West Virginia opponent played to a 10-point tiebreaker.
In this final battle for a point, Purser came through securing a sixth and final point in a 10-5 win.
The Spartans return to the MSU Indoor Tennis Center Sunday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. for a double header, facing off against Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan.
