Bishop’s Double-Double Leads Spartans in B1G Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan State volleyball was defeated in its B1G opener on Friday night, falling to Michigan 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-17) at the Crisler Center. Senior setter Julia Bishop tallied a double-double, leading the team in both assists (16) and digs (11).
MSU moves to 7-5 (0-1 B1G) on the season while Michigan improves to 11-1 (1-0 B1G). Michigan State is back in action on Sunday, September 29 taking on No. 4-ranked Penn State on the road at 2:00 p.m.
The Spartans were led offensively by junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson's 13 kills. Anderson led the team in points (15.5) adding an ace and two blocks. Junior outside hitter Taylor Preston tallied seven kills and tied for the team-high in blocks with two alongside Anderson and sophomore middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig.
MSU hit .071 for the match, finishing with 33 kills, 44 digs, five blocks and three aces. The Wolverines hit .245, paced by a 14-kill performance by Allison Jacobs.
Michigan State went ahead early in set one, 7-4, after a 5-0 run that included two of Anderson's three kills in the set. Preston tallied a solo block, her first of the year, to give MSU a 5-4 lead. Another lengthy Spartan run gave Michigan State a 13-10 lead nearing the mid-way point as MSU outscored the Wolverines 5-1 to force a timeout. Michigan tied the set at 14-14 out of the break before building a 19-17 lead. A Preston kill halved the Wolverine advantage at 19-18, but Michigan took set one ending it on a 6-3 run.
The Spartans trailed by as many as five points late in set two down 20-15. Anderson took over late however scoring four straight points of her own on three kills and a block to bring Michigan State back within one. Three consecutive Anderson kills forced a Wolverine timeout before her block out of the timeout. Kills by Preston and Holdem tied the second at 21-21 and a Wolverine service error evened the second at 22-22. Michigan caught a spark late however ending the frame on a 3-0 run.
A 5-1 Spartan run helped Michigan State tie the third set at 13-13 after a double block by Preston and junior middle blocker Evie Doezema. The Wolverines responded, utilizing a 9-1 scoring stretch to build a late 22-14 lead over MSU. A pair of Kulig kills cut into Michigan's lead late however UM took the set 25-17, and the match.
