Spartans Nipped By Terps In 10 Innings In Sunday’s Series Rubber Match

MSU clipped by UMD in extra-inning walk-off for second time in weekend.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Michigan State baseball was nipped by Maryland, 5-4 in a 10-inning thriller Sunday afternoon at UMD's Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium in the rubber match of both teams' B1G opening weekend series.
It was Maryland's second walk-off win in the three-game series, taking Friday night's series-opener, 7-6 in 10 innings. MSU won game two, 5-2, Saturday evening, setting up Sunday's rubber match.
Maryland's Brayden Martin knocked an RBI single to left field on Sunday for his second walk-off of the weekend, also providing the walk-off hit to right field in Friday's game.
The loss spoiled a solid outing by graduate pitcher Nick Ferazzi, who rang up an MSU career-high seven strikeouts in 6.0 IP, stymieing the Terps bats by allowing just three hits, one unearned run and three walks.
"I thought it was a shame for Nick Ferazzi, he deserved better. He really threw well and he battled it out and gave us everything he had. We sent him back out there for one more knowing he was tired, but he gutted out one more inning and got us through the sixth," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "But the problem is, when you give up the amount of walks and hit batters that we did with seven in three-and-two-thirds innings, that's how you lose close ballgames. Unfortunately, that's what happened to us today. I thought Nick deserved better because he threw well and our offense hung in there, but unfortunately, we couldn't push one more across today."
With Sunday's result, five of MSU's last six meetings with UMD have been decided by one-run and 12 of 19 total meetings have been determined by two runs or less.
The Spartans are now 9-12 on the season and 1-2 in B1G play after the first weekend of conference play. The Terps, who entered the weekend among others receiving votes in the national rankings, improved to 17-6 and 2-1 in league action. UMD has now won its last 23-straight B1G series.
MSU posted seven hits on the day, by seven different Spartans, with junior designated hitter Christian Williams and junior catcher Noah Bright bashing solo home runs for their hits, with C.Williams knocking his in the fifth, and Bright homering over the scoreboard in the seventh.
Freshman infielder Ryan McKay had a two-run single in the sixth for the other Spartan RBI. Freshman outfielder Landen Lozier, senior outfielder Jack Frank, junior outfielder/infielder Nick Williams and senior outfielder Greg Ziegler providing the other hits.
Sophomore reliever Nolan Higgins (1.2 IP, 3 Ks), junior Dominic Pianto and senior Harrison Cook (2.0 IP, 2 K) rounded out the pitching action.
Maryland got on the board first with a run in the third, but the Spartans erupted for a run in the fifth on C.Williams' HR. McKay's two-run single in the sixth gave MSU its first lead of the day at 3-1, before Bright extended the Green & White's advantage to 4-1 in the seventh. Maryland tied it with a three-run eighth inning, before the winning run in the 10th.
The Spartans return home to the Mitten State for its first five-game week of the season, featuring two in-state opponents, opening with a non-conference game at Michigan on Tuesday, March 26. First pitch in Ann Arbor is slated for 4 p.m. at UM's Fisher Stadium.
MSU then starts another four-game homestand at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field, hosting in-state foe Oakland on Wednesday, March 27 at 4:05 p.m.
The Green & White resume weekend B1G action for its conference home-opening series, welcoming Rutgers to town, Friday-Sunday, March 29-31. Friday's series opener and Saturday's second game of the series are slated for 3:35 p.m. first pitches, before Sunday's series finale at 1:05 p.m.
