No. 70 Women’s Tennis Drops to No. 28 Columbia, 4-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team closed out its six-match homestand where it was downed 4-2 by No. 28-ranked Columbia inside the MSU Tennis Center.
"This loss was pretty disappointing because this one was right there for the taking," said Michigan State head coach Kim Bruno. "We have got to be better. We have to be tougher in the bigger moments and get past these teams."
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 6-4 overall. Through the six-match stretch in East Lansing, MSU went 4-2 with both loses coming to top 30 programs, including No. 17 Southern California (6-1) and earlier on Sunday to the Lions.
In doubles action, Columbia started the day taking the doubles point, winning court two (6-3) and court three (6-2). Michigan State's lone court victory came from No. 44-ranked graduate Nicole Conard and senior Ayshe Can worked their way through Sophia Wang and Anna Zhang 6-3.
The Spartans would come back and tie the match 1-1 in quick fashion on court five. Sophomore Issey Purser swept Winta Tewolde in two sets and only allowed one game point 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Ria Bhakta also snagged a victory over Natacha Schou 6-3, 6-4.
The Lions momentum was too much for MSU, as they would take courts one (6-3, 6-3), court two (7-5, 6-1) and court three (7-5, 6-1) to secure the 4-2 victory.
The Spartans will fly down south for spring break as they face South Florida on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m.
