Two Spartans Reach Podium at 60th Midlands Championships

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Redshirt senior 174-pounder Marty Larkin and redshirt freshman heavyweight Max Vanadia each placed seventh on Monday afternoon at the 60th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. As a team Michigan State scored 32.5 points to place 13th of 25 teams.
Larkin and Vandia each finished with a 4-2 record at Midlands, with Vanadia winning four matches on the back side of the bracket after dropping his first-round bout. Vanadia's only losses of the tournament were to Stanford's Peter Ming in round one and in the consolation quarterfinals. Larking reached the quarterfinals on the winner's side before winning a pair of consolation matches.
Redshirt senior Tristan Lujan reached the 133-pound quarterfinals on the winner's side but fell in consecutive bouts to conclude his tournament. Freshman 184-pounder Cory Thomas won three matches in the consolation bracket but came up just one win short of the podium.
Michigan State wrestling is back in action on Friday, January 10 at No. 1-ranked Penn State. First whistle is set for 8 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
