Taylor Preston’s Double-Double Paces Volleyball at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior outside hitter Taylor Preston posted her first double-double of the season on Thursday night in Michigan State volleyball's 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22) loss to Maryland at the Xfinity Center Pavilion.
Preston led the Spartans with 12 kills on Thursday, adding 10 digs for her first double-double at MSU.
MSU moves to 8-16 (1-12 B1G) while Maryland improves to 11-13 (2-11 B1G). Spartan volleyball continues on the road tomorrow night when Michigan State meets Rutgers at Jersey Mike's Arena at 7:00 p.m. The Scarlet Knights enter the match 5-19 (0-13 B1G) following a 3-0 loss to UCLA on Thursday night.
Sophomore middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig hit .400 with seven kills (7-1-15) and led Michigan State with eight blocks. Posting a career-high in block assists was sophomore outside Taylah Holdem with five. Senior setter Julia Bishop posted 28 assists along with eight digs. Sophomore outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska posted a season-high 13 digs and senior libero Nalani Iosia added a match-high 16.
MSU hit .120 for the match along with a match-best 61 digs. The Spartans also posted 13 blocks and five service aces. Kulig added two aces to her final tally to lead Michigan State with 14 total points.
Maryland led by as many as 10 points in set one using an 8-2 run to lead MSU 19-9. Michigan State cut into that lead quickly out of a timeout using a pair of Bishop kills to pull within 20-13 on a 4-1 stretch. A Kulig kill and ace preceded a double block by junior outside hitter Akasha Anderson and junior middle blocker Evie Doezema as the Spartans used a 3-0 run to pull within six points late, 23-17.
Michigan State turned things around in set two getting out to an 18-11 lead over the Terrapins following a kill by junior middle blocker Nil Okur. Maryland found its footing late scoring six unanswered to pull within one point of the Spartans, 18-17. MSU responded to the adversity well scoring seven of the final nine points in the second to take it, 25-19. Kulig had three blocks and a kill for Michigan State in its last five points of the stanza.
Long runs dominated both sides in set three after Maryland opened the frame ahead 9-2 before a 6-0 Spartan response pulled MSU within one, 9-8. Back-to-back Preston kills forced an early Terrapin timeout. Trailing 12-9, the Spartans took a 14-12 lead on a 5-0 run at the mid-way point of the set. Anderson tallied a pair of kills in the run while Preston added a kill and an ace. A 12-3 Maryland scoring stretch put them on set point, 24-17, however before a Kulig kill stopped a set point.
Set four was the only back-and-forth battle of the night as both teams traded leads throughout. Trailing 14-11, the Spartans used a 4-0 spurt to take a 15-14 lead using one of Kulig's two solo blocks and a Iosia kill on a ball pushed into the backcourt. Preston's 12th kill of the match brought MSU within one late, 21-20, before a Terrapin hitting error tied the stanza at 21-21. A Terp service kept the Spartans within one, 23-22, but Maryland found the final two points of the match to take it 3-1.
