10/4/2024 10:47:00 PM | Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Michigan State volleyball dropped a back-and-forth battle at Indiana, 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22), on Friday night at Wilkinson Hall.
"I told the team there was a lot of good in tonight's match," said Michigan State volleyball head coach Leah Johnson. "We're still just a little too high error offensively and that's what we have to clean up. I like what we're doing, but disappointed in the close sets that we weren't able to prevail. We get stuck in one rotation every set and that's the difference."
The Spartans move to 7-7 overall (0-3 B1G) while Indiana improves to 8-5 (1-2 B1G).
MSU will look to secure its first B1G victory of the season on Sunday at No. 10-ranked Purdue. Sunday night's match will be televised nationally at 7:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network with Connor Onion and Elena Shkylar calling the action.
Senior libero Nalani Iosia led the way with 20 digs, her fifth time this season registering 20 or more digs in a match. Freshman defensive specialist Mya Bolton drew her first career start in the Green & White, tallying a season-high nine digs.
Junior outside hitters Akasha Anderson (13 kills) and Taylor Preston (11 kills) finished the match with double-digit kills, while senior opposite Aliyah Moore had eight. Moore added a season-best five blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Taylah Holdem had five kills on .400 hitting and four digs.
Senior setter Julia Bishop recorded a season-high 36 assists and neared a double-double with eight digs. Sophomore middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig posted eight blocks.
The Spartans hit .162 for the match but picked things up in set three where they hit .400. MSU finished with five service aces including two from Iosia. Indiana hit .201 for the match with Michigan State holding the Hoosiers to .114 hitting in set three and .083 hitting in set four.
Michigan State erased an early four-point deficit in set one, coming back from down 14-10 to tie the first at 14-14 on a kill by Anderson. The Spartans gained a lead, 16-15, on four Hoosier contacts and later tied the frame at 17-17 on an IU service error. A 3-0 Indiana run provided the Hoosiers with a 20-17 cushion as the teams traded points until the 23-21 mark. Indiana called a late timeout and took the final two points of the set to win 25-21.
With the second set tied at 9-9, MSU utilized a 9-4 run to build an 18-13 lead over the Hoosiers after the media timeout. An ace from freshman defensive specialist Mya Bolton highlighted the run and put the Spartans ahead 17-13. Indiana called for time down five and responded with a 9-0 that provided the Hoosiers with a 22-18 lead late. Kills by freshman middle blocker Carmen Waye and Anderson, followed by an Anderson ace cut the Hoosier lead down to one, 22-21, as MSU forced Indiana to call its final timeout. The Hoosiers ended the set on a 3-0 run to take it 25-21.
MSU got back in business in set three, taking the lead at 3-2 and never looking back. Michigan State led by as many as eight in the set after three straight Hoosier errors put the Spartans out front 19-11. Indiana battled back to cut MSU's lead to four at 20-16, but the Spartans had a response of their own. Michigan State trailed 10-6 early in set four but a block by Bishop and Kulig sparked a 6-0 Spartan run with Bishop behind the service line. The run was capped off with back-to-back kills by Preston. Indiana evened the score at 12-12, but MSU once again regained the lead taking a 16-13 advantage on a 4-1 spurt following a Moore kill. The Spartans called time to halt Indiana's momentum tied at 18-18 and took a 19-18 lead after a Hoosier service error, one of 12 on the night. A MSU service error unfortunately swung momentum back the other direction as Indiana rattled off a 6-1 stretch to go on match point. Michigan State rallied to stave off two match point tries to force an IU breather, but the Hoosiers took the set 25-22.
