Spartan Men’s Soccer Retains Big Bear Trophy With Draw Against Michigan
10/22/2024 10:22:00 PM | Men's Soccer
MSU and U-M play to second scoreless draw in as many seasons.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State men's soccer retained the Big Bear Trophy by playing to a scoreless draw with Michigan Tuesday night in the 25th annual Battle for the Big Bear at a packed DeMartin Stadium.
"Let's put this in perspective. It's on TV, so people can stay at home. It's a Tuesday night, and we had like 3500 fans, so that's amazing," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "That shows the community and really the state of Michigan. I know there were people driving from all areas of the state that came in from the west side, Detroit area, so kudos to our people and to do that on a Tuesday night with it on national TV- that's massive."
The Big Bear Trophy originated in 2000 and the Spartans kept the Big Bear in East Lansing, holding it since the 2022 season's 2-0 Victory for MSU over UM and after last season's 0-0 draw in Ann Arbor. Michigan State leads the series, 14-5-5, not playing for the trophy during the COVID season of 2020.
MSU also still leads the all-time series, 34-12-10, including 17-3-5 in East Lansing.
With Tuesday's draw, Michigan State moves to 5-6-3 overall on the season and 4-3-1 in Big Ten play, now with 13 points, remaining in fourth place in the B1G table. Michigan slides to 6-3-5 overall and 1-3-4 in B1G action for seven points, tying Northwestern for eighth-place in the league standings.
Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Zac Kelly made four saves in registering his sixth clean sheet of the season, including his fifth in B1G play. Kelly made a highlight-reel leaping snag early in the second half.
"As always Zac was great tonight. He wasn't called on to make a ton of saves, but sometimes that's harder, and when he had to make them, he was there. He made a great diving save. He's got five shutouts in the Big Ten, I believe, if my memory serves, which is really great."
U-M goalie Isaiah Goldson matched Kelly with four saves, including one in the waning minutes on a shot by senior defender Brandon Munson.
MSU had a slim, 6-4, edge in shots, while shots on goal was even at 4-4. The Spartans had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. The spirited rivalry match had 23 fouls, with 14 on UM and nine on MSU, and made until the last few seconds until a card, when one yellow was assessed to each team.
Michigan State plays its final road regular-season match next Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m., traveling to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State, currently ranked No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the Top Drawer Soccer Poll, and tied for second in the B1G standings.
