Sean Kerrigan and Richie Ludwig provide the offense for Michigan State.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Behind a pair of second-half goals, the Michigan State men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw against No. 1 Ohio State on Tuesday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
"What a heckuva college soccer game. I have to give our guys a ton of credit," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "We went on the road against the No.1 team in the country; we were against the wind in the first half. We gave up a goal we usually don't like to give up, but we fought hard in the second half. We came out in the second half brilliantly with two great goals from Kerrigan and Ludwig. We don't like giving up a late goal, but I felt like we did enough to get three points. We can takeaway a lot from this game, and prepare for Senior Day against a good Rutgers team."
The Spartans now stand 5-6-4 overall and 4-3-2 in Big Ten action. Ohio State is now 11-1-3 overall and 6-1-2 in league play. Michigan State remains in fourth place in the Big Ten standings with 14 points. Ohio State is the first No. 1 team that Michigan State has play since losing to No. 1 Creighton in 2015.
In the 13th minute, Ohio State took the early lead taking advantage of a Michigan State turnover. Ashton Bilow found David Wrona, who's shot got past redshirt-junior goalkeeper Zac Kelly to give the Buckeyes the 1-0 lead.
As the Spartans looked for the equalizer, the offense remained aggressive. Sophomore midfield Richie Ludwig had three consecutive shots, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The half ended with Ohio State still leading 1-0. The Buckeyes out-shot the Spartans 11-8 in the first 45 minutes of action, while MSU had three corner kicks compared to none by OSU.
Michigan State came to life in the second half due to the strong play of senior midfielder Sean Kerrigan. In the 63rd minute, the Spartans found the equalizer. The play started up the right side with Ludwig, who found Kerrigan's right foot. The goal now ties him for first on the team with junior midfielder Jonathan Stout.
Less than three minutes later, the Spartans took the lead, 2-1. Ludwig scored his second goal of the season with a brilliant assist from sophomore midfielder Colin Arce. Ludwig ended the game with three points.
The Buckeyes weren't done yet finding a way to equalize late to earn a point in the 79th minute. David Ajagbe scored his sixth goal of the season off assists from Donovan Williams and Luciano Pechota.
Kelly was stellar in goal with a season-high seven saves. The Buckeyes out-shot the Spartans 23-14, including 12-6 in the second half.
Michigan State will conclude the regular season hosting Rutgers on Senior Day on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. The Spartans will celebrate seniors Zack Babiak, Efosa Emovon, Sean Kerrigan, Vedad Kovac, Levin Gerhardt and Shion Soga.
