The Spartans out-shot the Falcons 16-7.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Michigan State men's soccer was not able to overcome an early goal, falling to Bowling Green, 1-0, at Cochrane Stadium on Friday night.
The Spartans fall to 2-2 with the loss, while the Falcons improve to 2-2-1 with the victory.
"I watched every minute of Bowling Green this season, and the Bowling Green I saw the first 10 minutes was not the Bowling Green from the first four games," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "They were obviously fired up to play a Big Ten team at home. We knew that, and we told the guys that. We just didn't match the intensity, and I guess that is on us coaches and the captains to get this going."
In the fifth minute, the Falcons struck first to take the 1-0 lead. Giovanni Soares found Trace Terry on the left side. The blast slipped past MSU goalkeeper Zac Kelly.
Junior midfielder Richie Ludwig had the Spartans' best early chance hitting the post in the 17th minute. Â After the goal, Michigan State maintained the majority of possession in the first half. In the 41st minute, the Spartans were unlucky again when senior defender Josh Adam hit the left post.Â
At the end of the first half, Michigan State had out-shot Bowling Green 5-4 overall, but the Falcons remained on top 1-0.
"We had a good response. We have got to find a way to score goals. Guys have to be responsible. We had been scoring goals, and we hit a little bit of a lull against Detroit and tonight. We hit the post three times, but no excuses we have to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net," Rensing said.
The foul count continued to rise for both teams in the second half. BGSU ended the game with 22 fouls compared to 14 for MSU. There was a total of six cards in the game.
The Spartans had one last opportunity with a corner kick with two minutes left. Freshman defender Charlie Norkett's header was saved by Bowling Green goalkeeper Gil Enzo, who made six saves on the day. Norkett had two shots in his 11 minutes of action.
MSU ended the game out-shooting Bowling Green, 16-7, including 11 in the second half.
Michigan State returns home to take on Oakland on Monday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
