Spartan Men’s Soccer Falls to Indiana Friday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michigan State men's soccer fell to first-place Indiana, 3-1, Friday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The Spartans fall to 5-6-2 overall and 4-3 in Big Ten games. Indiana improves to and 6-3-5 overall and 5-1-2 in league play.
Indiana got on the board first in the 22nd minute, scoring on a set piece. Justin Weiss gave the Hoosiers the1-0 lead with blast that slipped past redshirt-junior goalkeeper Zac Kelly. The Hoosiers made it a 2-0 advantage in the 40th minute after the Spartans were called for a handball in the box. Patrick McDonald converted the penalty kick.
The Spartans cut into the Indiana lead in the 42nd minute. This time an Indiana was called for a hand ball in the box. Junior defender Cristiano Bruletti converted the PK for his first goal of the season. It was also his first career penalty kick.
The first half ended with Michigan State trailing, 2-1.
In the 51st minute, the Hoosiers re-gained their two-goal advantage with an long-distance unassisted goal from Samuel Sarver.
After Indiana took the 3-1 lead, the Spartans looked to chip away at the deficit. In the 63rd minute, junior forward Jake Spadafora tested IU goalkeeper JT Harms, but the Hoosier gathered the attempt. Late substitutions freshman forward Mohamed Saad and junior midfielder Jack Guggemos both had late shots as well.
For the game, Michigan State out-shot Indiana, 12-9. The Spartans also had seven corner kicks, compared to three by the Hoosiers.
Michigan State returns home for the 25th annual Battle for the Big Bear against No. 18 Michigan on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium.
