Spartan Women's Tennis Completes Action at ITA Midwest Regionals

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Women's tennis wrapped up ITA Midwest Regional play on its home courts at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center on Friday, Oct. 13 as underclassmen Spartans put together promising performances.
The young pairing of sophomore Issey Purser and freshman Ria Bhakta made a run to the round of 16 in the doubles main draw while sophomore Matilde Morais and junior Liisa Vehvilainen highlighted singles play.
Morais made a spectacular run, stringing together three wins to go from the first qualifying round to get to the round of 32 among a field of the Midwest's 112 best competitors. Vehvilainen, the Spartans sole main draw automatic bid, also played into the round of 32, falling to the tournament No. 1 seed Jaedan Brown of Michigan.
In the main draw round of 64 Vehvilainen took care of NIU's Erika Demitriev 6-3, 6-3, while Morais handled Eastern Michigan's Linda Claire Eloundou Nga 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Purser and Bhakta ran out of gas in the round of 16 after outlasting their opponents in 8-7 (7-5) tiebreakers in both opening two rounds. The other underclassman duo of Morais and freshman Natalie Stasny also claimed a doubles victory.
Also earning a singles victory in the qualifying round was sophomore Sarah Fazlagic who edged out Marquette's Tiana Windbuchler in three sets (6-2, 5-7, 6-4).
Next, the Spartans will head to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the University of Alabama Classic on Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28.
