MSU Men's Soccer Ends Road Swing at Bowling Green

EAST LANSING, Mich - Michigan State men's soccer will conclude its two-game road trip at Bowling Green on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium.
Friday's game will be streamed on YouTube, free of charge, and produced by WBGU-TV with Stephen Jenkins and Will Airhart, calling the action.
The Spartans look to snap a three-game losing streak after falling to No. 10 Akron, 2-0, on Monday. Bowling Green is 0-2-2 this season, most recently tying Michigan 0-0 in Arbor.
LOOKING AT THE FALCONS
Michigan State leads the overall series with Bowling Green 24-17-6. The Falcons 3-0 win last season in East Lansing was BGSU's first victory against the Spartans since 2001. The  Falcons were 0-16-1 since 2001.
Michigan State holds a small 11-10-3 series lead on the road. Last time at Cochrane Stadium, the Spartans came away with a 3-0 win in 2018. Prior to 2018, the previous games were all 1-0 wins by the Spartans
The Falcons are 0-2-2 this season after four matches. Bowling Green has ties against No. 25 DePaul and Michigan and losses to No. 25 Loyola and Ohio State. Â
LAST TIME AGAINST BOWLING GREEN
On Sept. 6, 2021, Michigan State men's soccer was beaten by visiting Bowling Green, 3-0, at DeMartin Stadium. The loss also snapped the Spartans' seven-match win streak and 17-match unbeaten streak in the series with the Falcons. The Spartans had their chances, out-shooting the Falcons, 10-8, but BGSU made the most of its opportunities with a 5-3 shots on goals edge. The Falcons broke it open in the 61st minute with a goal by Kyle Cusimano. Bowling Green scored its final goal in the 75th minute. Roberto Fernandez Garrido took the Cusimano ball from the left side and finished to the lower right corner to seal the win.
SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
Both the Spartans and the Falcons are struggling to find the back of the net in the last few games. After scoring four goals in the first two games, MSU has been shutout in its last two outings. Bowling Green has also had a hard time finding the back of the net. The Falcons are looking for their first goal of the season. The Bowling Green offense has been solid, allowing only two goals this season.Â
GETTING IN THE GAME
The Spartans have been getting a lot of players in the game. Twenty-one of the 28 athletes on the roster have played in at least one of the four games this season.Â

The Spartan schedule doesn't get any easier. After facing Bowling Green, MSU will return home to the friendly confines to take on Chicago State on Monday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. MSU will then face nationally-ranked Washington (Sept. 16) and Indiana (Sept. 23).
LOGGING IN THE MINUTES
Senior transfer Owen Finnerty is making a smooth transition from Michigan to Michigan State. Finnerty started five games in goal for the Wolverines last season, allowing only six goals for a 1.11 goals against average. For his career, he has played over 2,300 minutes allowing 29 goals and making 65 saves. Finnerty made a season-high six goals against No. 14 Akron on Sept. 5.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Four different players have scored MSU's four goals this season. Redshirt-senior defender Will Perkins and freshman forward Jake Spadafora scored in the win against Army, while graduate midfielder Jack Beck and junior midfielder Vedad Kovac found the back of the net against No. 4 Notre Dame.
FINDING THE 11
Seven Spartans have started the first four games of the season, including seniors Jack Beck and Will Perkins. Newcomers Elijah Howe and Owen Finnerty have both played in all three matches. Sophomore Josh Adam and juniors Jack Zugay and Greyson Mercer have also started every game.

Michigan State men's soccer team had three players named to the Big Ten Players to Watch list.
Graduate midfielder Jack Beck, redshirt-senior defender Will Perkins and junior forward Greyson Mercer were all honored by the league.
The Big Ten preseason poll was also released Monday, as voted on by the nine league coaches. MSU was voted to pick sixth, while reigning Big Ten Tournament champion, Penn State, was voted to finish first. Indiana was voted to finish second, with Maryland taking the third position.
Beck, a native of DeWitt, Michigan, is a two-time All-Big Ten selection for the Spartans, earning first-team honors last season. He was second on the team in scoring in 2021 with nine points. Beck ended last season third in the Big Ten in assists with seven.
Perkins, a Detroit, Michigan native, returns for his fifth season with Michigan State. He started all 17 games last season. Also in 2021, Perkins was fourth on the team in scoring with two goals and two assists for six points.
Mercer, who hails from Heber City, Utah, enters his third season with the Spartans. He has played in 13 games over the last two seasons with four starts.

The Spartans ended exhibition action with a 1-2 record in three home games. MSU opened with a 3-0 win against Lawrence Tech on Aug. 10 behind goals by freshman forward  Jonathan Stout, senior midfielder Conner George and sophomore forward Efosa Emovon. MSU then dropped a pair of hard-fought 1-0 battles against Butler on Aug. 14 and No. 7 Pitt on Aug. 19.

The Spartans welcome nine new players to the 2022 roster with seven freshmen and two transfers. Graduate goalkeeper Owen Finnerty may look familiar to Spartan fans, transferring from Michigan. Junior defender Elijah Howe comes to MSU from West Florida. The seven freshmen include freshman midfielder Jack Guggemos from Okemos and  Jake Spadafora from Northville.

Michigan State brings back several veterans to the 2022 squad. Both Jack Beck and Will Perkins will return for their fifth seasons with MSU. The duo of captains are the final to Spartans on the roster who were a part of the 2018 College Cup squad.
