Petruno Earns First Trip to NCAA Championships, Beadlescomb Finishes First in 5000m Heat
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It was a banner evening for Michigan State men's distance runners John Petruno and Morgan Beadlescomb on Friday, as the two Spartans competed in the NCAA East Preliminary Round's third night at the Haugh Track & Field Complex in Bloomington, Indiana.
Â
Petruno punched his first trip to the national meet with a personal-best time in the men's 1500m, while Beadlescomb held off a late challenger to finish first in his heat of the men's 5000m national semifinal.
Â
The night began with Petruno running a personal record of 3:39.70 to place third in the first heat of the 1500m quarterfinals, using a strong kick in the last 200 meters to get neck-and-neck with the leaders on the final stretch. The placement automatically qualified the Spartan for Eugene and finish with the third-fastest overall time in the quarterfinals.
Â
Closing out Friday for MSU was Beadlescomb in the second heat for the men's 5000m semifinal round, as he battled out of the pack in the final few laps to set up a final head-to-head fight with Harvard's Acer Iverson for the last 400 meters. Beadlescomb would beat out Iverson by nine one-hundredths of a second at 13:42.21 to place first in the heat and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Finals at Oregon's Hayward Field, finishing seventh overall in the East.
Â
Michigan State closes out the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Saturday, May 28 with five women looking to clinch spots at the NCAA Championships in two weeks. Quiara Wheeler opens the final day at 1 p.m. in the discus throw semifinal, while Katie Osika and Lauren Freeland are set for the 1500m quarterfinals at 5:15 p.m. The 3000m steeplechase quarterfinals with Kate Stewart-Barnett is slated for 5:40 p.m., while Jaiden Paris closes out the weekend for MSU at 6:15 p.m. in the 100m hurdle quarterfinals.
