MSU will send a contingent of eight Spartans to NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Five women closed out action at the NCAA East Preliminary Round for the Michigan State track and field team on Saturday at the Haugh Track & Field Complex in Bloomington, Indiana.
Â
MSU saw all five women finish just a few spots away from qualifying for the NCAA Championships, but none were able to join the eight other Spartans that had already locked up their trips to Eugene, Oregon in two weeks.
Â
Quiara Wheeler finished up her weekend in the women's discus throw, posting a 51.24m toss on her second attempt in the first flight, finishing 20th in the semifinal round, missing a chance at returning to Oregon by eight spots.
Â
The women's 1500m quarterfinal saw both Lauren Freeland and Katie Osika run personal-best times in the first heat but failed to secure their place among the 12 qualifiers bound for Eugene. Freeland was able to shatter her PR with a 4:14.86 time that put her eighth in the heat and 14th overall, just outside of a time-based qualification. Osika notched a PR of 4:16.44 to take 10th in the section and 18th overall.
Â
In the women's 3000m steeplechase, rookie Kate Stewart-Barnett ended her first season with a 10:14.17 final time that put her ninth in the second of three heats. The Canadian's time finished 19th overall, outside the 12 qualifying spots in the national meet.
Â
Jaiden Paris was also just on the outside of the 12 national qualifiers for the women's 100m hurdle quarterfinals, posting a 13.48 in the third and final heat to finish seventh in her section and hold the 15th-best mark in the quarterfinal.
Â
Michigan State's eight qualifying athletes will now compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships from June 8-10 at Oregon's Hayward Field. Heath Baldwin and Ryan Talbot (men's decathlon), Trevor Stephenson (men's pole vault), John Petruno (men's 1500m), Morgan Beadlescomb (men's 5000m), Sophia Franklin (women's pole vault) and Jenna Magness and Makayla Perez (women's 10,000m) are set to head to head west looking to become NCAA Champions.
