Huskers pull away late.
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Michigan State baseball was nipped by Nebraska under the Friday night lights of Hawks Field at Haymarket Park by a 6-3 final score in the second game of the three-game Big Ten Conference series.
Down 3-1 after three innings, the Spartans came back and tied it up at 3-3 in the sixth, but a three-run home run by Nebraska in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the home team Huskers the advantage, evening the series at a game apiece after the 4-1 Victory for MSU in Thursday night's series opener.Â
"I'm very proud of our guys, I thought we really competed tonight," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "It came down to the eighth, and there's nobody that I would rather have the ball in their hand than Kyle Bischoff. Credit their guy, he had a good at bat and got the ball up in the wind. It's a tough, tough loss for our guys. I know they're hurting right now, but we'll be back tomorrow and ready to play."
Junior outfielder Jack Frank and sophomore infielder Trent Farquhar smacked solo home runs, while junior outfielder Casey Mayes knocked an RBI triple. Farquhar along with fellow sophomore infielder Mitch Jebb and graduate senior Peter Ahn were all 1-for-3, with Ahn scoring a run in the sixth, coming around from second on the triple by Mayes in the sixth inning. Mayes and Frank both ended 1-for-4. Jebb and Farquhar each added a walk.
On the mound, junior starter Harrison Cook went 3.0 IP, scattering six hits, yielding three runs with two walks and one strikeout, inducing one double play and getting four groundouts. Junior reliever Andrew Carson went 2.0 IP with three Ks, but had to leave with an injury sustained while warming up in the top of the sixth.Â
Junior Wyatt Rush took over, going 2.1 IP, with two hits, two runs and two walks, but did get a big double play to end the seventh on a foulout to sophomore Brock Vradenburg in foul territory off first base and flipped back to Rush covering first to double up the runner and end the inning. Graduate senior Kyle Bischoff came on with two one and one out in the eighth, yielding one hit and one run with one K.
MSU struck first on a solo shot by Frank in the top of the second for the early 1-0 advantage.
Just as fast as the Spartans took the lead, the Huskers tied it up on a solo home run to lead off the second, before the home team added two more in the bottom of the third on a two-run single for a 3-1 lead.
Farquhar cut the gap in half with one swing of the bat on the leadoff blast to right field on the solo home run.
Ahn led off the sixth with a single to right, and three batters later, Mayes smacked a triple to right center for his Big Ten-leading seventh three-bagger of the season, driving in Ahn and leveling the score at 3-all.
Thanks to MSU's defense, including back-to-back nice leather-flashing plays by Jebb at short in the sixth, and Vrandenburg's double play in the seventh, the Spartans kept the Huskers at bay until the eighth, when a one-out double by Colby Gomes was followed by a walk. MSU brought on Bischoff to face Brice Matthews, and the Husker won the battle of the big guns with a home run that got up into the windy Lincoln night air and landed over the center field wall.
The Spartans tried to rally in the ninth as Frank reached with one out on a fielding error, but the rally came to a close, as did the game.
