
Men's Tennis Hosts Middle Tennessee State in Nonconference Action

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis is back home this Sunday, February 20 for a nonconference match against Middle Tennessee State. The Spartans take on the Blue Raiders inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
MSU is 7-2 overall, with conference play beginning in March. The Spartans have won three of their last five matches and are 7-1 when playing at home.
LAST TIME OUT
Michigan State split a pair of matches on Saturday, February 12 in East Lansing. After losing a tough fight to Louisville 6-1, the Spartans bounced back for a 5-2 win over Chicago State in the evening match.
In the morning against Louisville, the Cardinals claimed wins on all three doubles courts to go up 1-0 heading into singles action. The second point was won when Sergio Hernandez defeated MSU's Graydon Lair 6-4, 6-4 on the No. 4 court..
Louisville's winning ways were briefly interrupted when freshman Max Sheldon came up with a Spartan victory on the No. 6 court. He defeated David Mizrahi of the Cardinals in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to move to a 10-4 overall record in singles play. Louisville bounced back and came away with the win after wrapping up with victories at No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 singles.
The evening was a brighter spot for the Spartans as they defeated the Panthers 5-2. Although Chicago State came away with the doubles point, MSU won five of its six singles matches for the win.
Jarreau Campbell defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to start things off. Shortly after, Kazuki Matsuno won at No. 5, followed by a 6-1, 7-5 victory by freshman Josh Portnoy at the No. 6 court.
Josh Mukherjee moved to 5-2 on the season in singles play when he defeated Chicago State's Javier Sanchez Pradillo 6-3, 6-2. At the top spot, Anthony Pero won his first set 6-4 before falling 4-6 in the second set to force a 10-point tiebreaker set. He was defeated 10-2 in the tiebreaker by Chicago State's Pedro Alvarez.

SCOUTING THE BLUE RAIDERS
Middle Tennessee State is 9-3 overall with a 1-0 mark in Conference-USA play. The Blue Raiders have picked up wins against tough opponents in Virginia Tech, Indiana and Louisville this month, and have won four of their last five matches.
The Spartans are 0-3 all-time against Middle Tennessee State, having played all their matches on MTSU's home turf in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. MSU will look to improve upon the record and pick up their first-ever victory against the Blue Raiders. The last time the two teams met on January 17, 2020, MTSU came away with a 6-1 victory over the Green & White.

Michigan State travels to Muncie, Indiana for the team's second road match of the season. The Spartans take on Ball State on Saturday, February 26 at 1 p.m. inside the Northwest YMCA in Muncie.
