Michigan State battles back from 16 down in the third quarter in Big Ten opener.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite fighting back from a 16-point second-half deficit, the Michigan State women's basketball team dropped a 76-71 overtime thriller against Purdue in its Big Ten opener at the Breslin Center on Monday.
Graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel's layup after a steal with two second left in the second half sent the game into the Spartans' first overtime game of the season. The Boilermakers took care of business in overtime to hold on for the win.
The Spartans fall to 6-4 overall, losing four straight and 0-1 in Big Ten action, while Purdue improves to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in league action. Michigan State is 20-21 in Big Ten openers, having won seven of their 12.
McDaniel reached the 20-point mark for the third-straight game with 22 total points, adding three assists and two steals. Junior guard Gabby Elliott scored 13 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter. Sophomore guard Matilda Ekh added 12 points for the Spartans.
Purdue was led by 18 points from Lasha Petree.
Both teams struggled with turnover with Purdue turning it over 30 times to the Spartans 16.
Back-to-Back 3-pointers from senior guard Moira Joiner and Ekh tied the game at 10-10 midway through the first quarter. A Taiyier Parks steal and bucket by Joiner put the Spartans on top 12-10. Behind seven points from Joiner in the first 10 minutes, Michigan State led after the first stanza, 19-15.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the second quarter with only four combined point through the first two and a half minutes. The Boilermakers recovered with an 8-0 to take a 28-22 lead, leading to an MSU timeout at the 5:01 mark. Ekh snapped a nearly four minutes Spartan scoring drought to right the ship. Petree scored 10 points in the second period alone as Purdue jumped out to a 33-30 halftime lead.
After a Madison Layden layup, Purdue took its first double-digit lead of the game 49-38, leading to a MSU timeout at the 4:27 mark of the third quarter. The Boilermakers took control in the third period, out-scoring the Spartans, 22-11 to open up a 55-41 lead. WIth five seconds remaining in the stanza, the Boilermakers jumped out to its biggest lead of the game with a 16 points lead after a pit of Jayla Smith free throws.
Back-to-back buckets by junior guard Elliott pulled MSU into range, 59-49, as Purdue called timeout at the 6:49 mark. MSU was able to keep Purdue off the scoreboard for over nearly two minutes, trimming the Boilermaker lead. An 8-0 MSU run made it a four-point game 61-57 with three minutes remaining
An Elliott basket tied the game at 61, capping off 12-0 Spartan run with 2:39 left. After Purdue briefly took the lead, McDaniel tied the at the end of regulation before Purdue took control in extra time.
Michigan State now opens Big Ten Conference road play on Sunday, Dec. 11, as the Spartans travel to No. 4/5 Ohio State. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
Michigan State Women's Basketball Post-Game Notes: vs. Purdue
• Michigan State is 20-21 in Big Ten openers, having won seven of their 12. MSU is 9-7 in league openers in Coach Merchant's 16 seasons after losing to Iowa in last season's league opener. During the 2020-21 season, the Spartans won their opener in Minneapolis, 81-68 over the Gophers.
• Despite trailing by 16 points with five seconds to play in the third quarter, the Spartans were able to utilize a 12-0 run beginning at the 6:10 mark of the fourth period to tie the game at 61-all with 2:39 to play.
• Graduate guard Kamaria McDaniel made the game-tying layup with two seconds remaining to force overtime, completing regulation at 63-all.
• The Green & White participated in their first overtime contest since Dec. 20, 2021, in which the Spartans fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 85-84, despite a 50-piece from 2022 WNBA first round draft pick Nia Clouden.
• In MSU's most recent overtime game in Big Ten play, the Spartans published a 78-70 win against Nebraska in its league opener on Dec. 31, 2019. MSU trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, but chipped away at the deficit to book the overtime win.
