Five in Double Figures as No. 12 Michigan State Hangs on to Beat Portland, 78-77, in Phil Knight Invitational

PORTLAND, Ore. – No. 12 Michigan State took a 12-point lead with less than four minutes left before Portland narrowed the gap to one point with a chance to win at the buzzer, but the Spartans survived, hanging on for a 78-77 win over the Pilots in the fifth place game of the Phil Knight Invitational, held at the Chiles Center.
Senior guard Tyson Walker scored 16 points and had five rebounds to lead five players in double figures. Sophomore guard Pierre Brooks matched his career-high with 15 points, while graduate forward Joey Hauser had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, junior guard A.J. Hoggard finished with 12 points and a game-high nine assists and junior forward Mady Sissoko added 11 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.

- The Spartans went into the second half trailing by eight points, 42-34, and were down nine points, 46-37, after a jumper from Tyler Robertson.
- A three from Walker followed by a dunk from Sissoko cut the lead to 46-44. A technical foul was called on the play and Sissoko sank three free throws and Hoggard followed with a driving layup, giving MSU a 49-46 lead at the 17:09 mark and capping a 10-0 run.
- The Spartans never trailed the rest of the way, using an 11-2 run over 3:28 to take a 76-64 lead on a floating jumper from Hoggard with 3:52 to play.
- Walker hit a driving layup with 1:10 to play, but Robertson hit two free throws and 3-pointers from Kristian Sjolund cut the lead to 78-77 with 43 seconds left.
- Brooks missed a jumper with 10 seconds left and Portland had two chances at the buzzer but the Spartans were able to hold them off for the win.
- Portland went into the half with a 42-34 lead, shooting 47.1 percent from the floor, while hitting nine shots from 3-point land (47.4%).
- There were four ties and four lead changes in the opening minutes and the game was tied at 11-all before MSU went on a 10-3 run to take a 21-14 lead on a dunk from freshman center Carson Cooper with 11:43 to play.
- The Pilots used an 8-1 run to tie the game at 22-all on a 3-pointer from Juan Sebastian Gorocito and the teams traded the lead three times with MSU holding a 26-25 advantage on a layup from Hauser with 7:15 to play.
- Portland would go on a 17-6 run and took a 10-point lead, 42-32, on a 3-pointer from Robertson with 37 seconds left.
- A layup from junior guard A.J. Hoggard cut the lead to 42-34 at the break.
- Michigan State shot 52.5 percent from the floor (31-of-59), including 56.7 percent in the second half (17-of-30).
- The Spartans had a 34-24 advantage in rebounding, including an 18-7 edge in the second half.
